📚 On This Day | 2 June 1915

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar completed his Master of Arts (M.A.) in Economics at Columbia University, New York, marking a significant milestone in a remarkable academic journey that would shape modern India.

His M.A. thesis, "Ancient Indian Commerce," examined India's economic life in ancient times and reflected his early interest in economics, history, and social development. Alongside Economics, he studied Sociology, History, Philosophy, and Anthropology, building the interdisciplinary foundation that would later inform his work as a scholar, constitutionalist, economist, and social reformer.

At a time when millions in India were denied access to education because of caste discrimination, Ambedkar's achievement at one of the world's leading universities stood as a powerful statement on the transformative power of knowledge and perseverance.

The ideas and perspectives he gained during his years at Columbia would influence his lifelong struggle for social justice, equality, democracy, and human dignity.

As we remember this historic achievement, we also celebrate Dr. Ambedkar's enduring message that education is the most powerful instrument for individual empowerment and social transformation.

"Cultivation of mind should be the ultimate aim of human existence."
- Dr. B. R. Ambedkar

1 June

On this day in 1873, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule published Gulamgiri (Slavery), one of the most influential works in the history of India's anti-caste movement.

Phule dedicated the book to the people of the United States who fought against slavery and used it to draw parallels between the oppression of enslaved Black people in America and the oppression faced by Shudras and Ati-Shudras under the caste system in India.

Written in the form of dialogues, Gulamgiri challenged Brahmanical supremacy, exposed caste-based discrimination, and called for social equality, education, and human dignity. The work became a foundational text of anti-caste thought and continues to inspire movements for justice and equality.

More than 150 years later, Gulamgiri remains a powerful reminder that the struggle against oppression is inseparable from the struggle for human freedom.

On this day in 1869, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule published his famous Powada on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

A Powada is a traditional Marathi ballad or narrative poem that tells the story of historical events and heroic figures. For generations, Powadas were performed through song and storytelling to preserve history and make it accessible to ordinary people.

Through this work, Phule celebrated the life, leadership, and achievements of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Written in Marathi for a wider audience, the Powada helped bring Shivaji Maharaj’s story to the people and remains one of the earliest modern literary tributes dedicated to him.

The work reflects Phule’s admiration for Shivaji Maharaj and his belief that history should be accessible to everyone, not just a privileged few.

On this day, 31 May 1936, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar addressed the Mumbai Elaka Mahar Parishad at Naigaum, Bombay (now Mumbai), delivering a landmark speech titled “What Path to Salvation?”

Speaking to his people in Marathi, Babasaheb explained that untouchability was not merely an injustice against individuals, but a social struggle rooted in caste hierarchy. He described it as a conflict between those who claimed equality and a system determined to deny it.

He urged the oppressed to think seriously about their future, dignity, and the question of conversion, emphasizing that true liberation required preparation, self-respect, and collective strength.

Babasaheb reminded his audience that those who accepted subordination need not question the system-but those who wished to live with equality and self-respect must think deeply about how to secure their freedom.

“Those who wish to live a life of self-respect and equality should think.”

-Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

The victims are in hospital. The nation should be paying attention.

This was not a scene from the past. It happened in Tamil Nadu.

According to reports, seven Dalits were injured in a brutal attack in Nettur village, Tenkasi district. As the victims recover in hospital beds, the country must confront an uncomfortable truth: caste violence continues to scar lives and communities across India.

The Ambedkar International Center calls for immediate justice, accountability, and protection for those affected.

The Constitution promised dignity, equality, and liberty. Those promises must extend to every village, every street, and every citizen.

Jai Bhim.

On this day, 30 May 1920, the All India Depressed Classes Conference began in Nagpur under the presidency of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj.

Bringing together more than 500 representatives from different regions of India, the three-day gathering became one of the earliest large-scale efforts to organize against untouchability and caste discrimination.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, S.N. Shivtarkar, S.J. Kamble, Kisan Bansod and other leaders addressed the conference, discussing the social, political, and educational rights of the Depressed Classes.

At a time when millions were denied dignity, representation, and equal opportunities, Nagpur 1920 demonstrated the growing determination of oppressed communities to organize, speak for themselves, and demand justice.

A milestone in the history of the anti-caste movement.

| 29 May 1972

The Dalit Panthers emerged in Maharashtra as one of the most influential anti-caste movements in modern India.

Inspired by the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and shaped by a generation of writers, poets, and activists, the movement challenged caste oppression through protest, literature, cultural resistance, and political action.

More than an organisation, the Dalit Panthers became a symbol of defiance, dignity, and self-respect for oppressed communities across India.

Over five decades later, their roar continues to echo in every struggle for equality, justice, and human dignity.

📜 ON THIS DAY | 29 MAY 1928

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar appeared before the Simon Commission and presented the demands of the Depressed Classes at Damodar Hall, Parel, Bombay.

At a time when the voices of the Depressed Classes were largely excluded from positions of power, Ambedkar used this opportunity to place their concerns directly before a constitutional body examining India’s future political framework.

His submission addressed issues affecting the Depressed Classes, including education, representation, citizenship rights, and social exclusion. The memorandum argued that a community denied equal rights and opportunities could not participate in democracy on equal terms.

This engagement with the Simon Commission remains one of the significant early moments in Ambedkar’s political advocacy, demonstrating his commitment to securing justice, equality, and representation for the most marginalized sections of Indian society.

🚨 AIC NEWS | FIROZABAD, UTTAR PRADESH

Atin Kumar was only 20 years old.

A B.Sc. student. A son. A young man working to build a better future for himself and his family.

According to reports, Atin Kumar died by su***de after an incident that his family alleges involved caste-based humiliation and assault at a library in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Media reports state that a su***de note was recovered, and an FIR has been registered under relevant provisions, including the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Multiple accused persons have reportedly been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

Beyond the headlines is a young student whose life ended far too soon.

Every student deserves dignity.
Every student deserves equal access to education.
No student should face discrimination because of their caste, identity, or background.

AIC stands with the principles of justice, equality, and human dignity. We call for a fair and transparent investigation and accountability based on the facts established by law.

Justice for Atin Kumar.
