Sutra Sunday | Yoga Sutra 2.33
🪷 Vitarka-bādhane pratipakṣa-bhāvanam ~ When disturbed by negative thoughts, cultivate the opposite.
Our minds are constantly creating stories. Some are helpful, while others pull us toward fear, judgment, self-doubt, or frustration.
Patañjali doesn’t ask us to ignore those thoughts or pretend they don’t exist, but instead to notice when a thought is creating suffering, then gently choose a different perspective.
This isn’t about forcing positivity or denying what’s really happening. It’s about recognizing that we don’t have to believe every thought our minds produce.
We can pause, create a little space, and choose the thought that leads us toward greater clarity, compassion, and peace.
On the mat, this might look like replacing “I’m bad at this pose” with “I’m learning and practicing.”
Off the mat, this sutra reminds us that while we can’t always control the first thought that arises, we can choose which thoughts we continue to nourish.
👉🏼 This week, notice one thought that keeps repeating itself. Before accepting it as truth, pause and ask yourself, “What would the opposite of this feeling be?” See if you can meet your thoughts with curiosity, and explore it through a new lens.
What changes when you stop believing every thought your mind offers?
We’d love to hear what you notice. Share your experience below, or leave a 🪷 if you’re practicing alongside us.
See you next Sunday as we continue exploring one sutra at a time.
