It is with so much joy and pride that we celebrate Toniann DeOliveira, CPM! 🎉❤️

Toniann has officially completed her midwifery apprenticeship and academic studies, passed the NARM examination, and earned the credential of Certified Professional Midwife.

Those three letters—CPM—represent so much more than passing an exam. They represent years of studying, long days and sleepless nights, countless hours on call, prenatal and postpartum visits, births, skills, charting, learning, growing, and showing up again and again for mothers, babies, and families.

I have had the privilege of watching Toniann grow throughout this journey, and one of the things I have appreciated most is the development of her confidence, judgment, and critical-thinking skills. Midwifery asks us not only to know what to do, but to understand why, to recognize when something is changing, and to remain grounded enough to make thoughtful decisions while honoring the families we serve.

An apprenticeship may have an ending, but becoming a midwife is a lifelong journey. There will always be more to learn, more wisdom to gather, and more ways to grow into this calling.

Toniann, you worked incredibly hard for this. You earned it.

Student Midwife Christie was in good company during our latest birth! Doggy Doula was on duty! 🐾

Dogs are masters at detecting danger, yet when birth unfolds they do the opposite of what we’d expect, they often choose calm—lying quietly nearby, offering a gentle paw, and simply keeping watch.

They very rarely respond with fear. Instead, they settle in. As if they know what most have forgotten:

Normal birth is not an emergency. 🐾🫶🏼

There is something so beautiful about little hands being included in the rhythm of family care!

At today’s postpartum visit, big sibling helped take mama’s pulse ⏱️-watching, learning, participating, and feeling connected to this sacred season of welcoming a new baby.

When siblings are gently included in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care, birth becomes less mysterious and more normal. It becomes something rooted in family, trust, and love rather than fear. They learn that babies are welcomed, mothers are cared for, and families heal together.

These early moments plant seeds of confidence, compassion, and belonging that can last a lifetime.

Birth is not just the arrival of a baby. It is the shaping of a family.

Her arrival was steady and powerful, a reflection of a mama who leaned in, trusted deeply, and rose to meet her baby. A reminder that birth is not just about bringing life in—but about stepping into strength! And WOW did this mama show strength!

To be trusted in such sacred moments-to witness, to learn, to grow within this work-is an honor beyond words.

It is through this trust that midwifery continues, and through these connections that it is carried forward.

Sometimes we do have to transfer… and that is not failure—it is our duty.

As midwives, our role is to honor physiology, to trust the innate intelligence of the body - to create an environment where oxytocin flows, where safety is felt, and where a woman can unfold in her power.

We are not here to control birth.
We are here to guard it.

That also means knowing our scope.
Knowing when to watch…
When to support…
And when to act.

Because true wisdom in midwifery isn’t just about holding space for normal -
it’s about recognizing when birth is asking for something more. Sometimes, the most powerful and protective decision we make is to transfer care back into the medical model.

Not from fear.
Not from failure.
But from discernment, humility, and deep respect for both physiology and safety.

This work is not about home birth at all costs.
It is about right care, at the right time, in the right hands.

A strong midwife is not one who avoids transfer, but one who recognizes when it is wise and prudent, and walks that path with clarity, compassion, and unwavering support.

Because at the center of it all is not a location…
It’s a mother.
It’s a baby.
It’s a family.

And they deserve care that is both trusting of birth and responsive to need.

One of the questions we get all the time is:
“Can we bring our kids to our appointments?”

And the answer is always YES.

When children are included in their mother’s care, they naturally become part of the journey. They hear their baby’s heartbeat, watch bellies grow, and ask curious questions about what’s happening.

Including them also helps children begin to understand that pregnancy and birth are normal, physiological processes. They get to witness their mom being strong, capable, and doing something hard — and learning that hard things can still be normal and beautiful.

In our office you’ll find a little kids corner — a cozy space where little ones can play, and feel at home while their mama receives care.

Because when families are included in the process, birth becomes a shared story!

We love watching siblings become part of the village long before the baby arrives. 🤍

✨ The Work of a Midwife ✨

The work of a midwife is not to control birth, it is to witness it.

To hold steady space while a mother’s body unfolds in its own ancient rhythm.
To listen more than intervene.
To trust physiology.

Birth is not something we make happen.
It is something we protect, honor, and guard.

What an honor it is to be invited into one of life’s most sacred thresholds, to stand quietly beside a family while a new baby enters the world in their own perfect timing.

Midwifery is presence.
Midwifery is trust.
Midwifery is remembering that birth already knows what to do.

And being trusted to hold that space…
is one of the greatest honors.
