👃 Think You Broke Your Nose? Timing Matters!
Whether it happened during a game, an accident or even a run-in with a lamppost—yes, “walked into lamppost” has its own diagnosis code: W22.02XA—facial fractures should be evaluated promptly.
For a nasal fracture, there are usually two treatment windows:
⏱️ Within the first 3 hours: The nose may be evaluated and treated before significant swelling develops.
🗓️ After swelling begins: We need to wait about 3–5 days for the swelling to go down so the injury can be properly evaluated.
If the nasal fracture needs to be repaired, treatment generally must take place within 14 days of the injury—before the bones begin healing in the wrong position. Waiting too long may mean a more complicated surgery later.
Nasal and orbital fractures are not all treated the same. Seek emergency care immediately for vision changes, double vision, trouble moving the eye, severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, clear fluid draining from the nose or difficulty breathing.
