An opioid overdose can look like someone who is “just sleeping,” but waiting can cost precious time.

Possible signs include:
• They cannot be awakened
• Breathing is slow, shallow or stopped
• You hear choking, gurgling or snoring-like sounds
• Lips or fingernails appear blue, gray or pale
• Pupils are very small

Call 911. Give naloxone if available. Support breathing and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. A person may need more than one dose, and they still need emergency medical care even if they wake up.

Save this post. Someday, knowing what to do could help you save a life.

August is Overdose Awareness Month, and this year’s message is impossible to ignore: 25 Years On. Still Needed.

Preliminary CDC data show overdose deaths continuing to decline nationally, and Chicago and Cook County have now reported a third consecutive year of declining opioid-overdose deaths. But progress is not permission to look away. Fentanyl remains involved in most local opioid-overdose deaths, and Black Chicagoans continue to experience a deeply unequal burden.

Throughout August, we are shahring practical information about overdose response, today’s changing drug supply, treatment, recovery and the ways our community can act. We will also remember the people behind every number.

Progress is real. So is the work ahead.

Self-care is not a bubble bath requirement. In recovery, it can be getting enough sleep, eating a real meal, going to therapy, moving your body, taking your medications as prescribed, saying no, answering the phone, or resting before you hit empty.

Families often ask, "What should I say?"

Start here:
• I love you.
• I'm worried.
• I'll help you find support.
• I care too much to stay silent.

You don't need to have all the answers. Sometimes, starting the conversation is the most important step.
