June is Men's Health Month. Every year, men are told: 'Be strong.' 'Walk it off.' 'Man up.' But when those words become armor against asking for help, they stop being strength and start becoming silence.

The truth? Alcohol-related deaths are 2x higher in men than women (CDC, 2023). Men die by su***de at nearly 4x the rate of women (AFSP, 2024). Checking in on your 'strong' friend isn't weakness. It might save their life.

At Serenity House, we have walked alongside thousands of men rebuilding their lives in recovery. There is room for you here.

June 1st is National Say Something Nice Day, and we're kicking off Pride Month with the most powerful thing we can say: 'You belong here.'

At Serenity House, we've always believed recovery should feel safe for everyone no matter who you love, how you identify, or where you've been. This month, we're celebrating Pride and recovery side by side, because both journeys begin with one honest step.

To everyone in our community who is walking the road to healing: You are seen. You are worthy. You are not alone.

Tag someone who needs to hear something kind today.

Not every win in recovery is loud.

Sometimes it looks like:
• Getting up and showing up
• Making it through a hard day
• Choosing not to go back
• Trying again… even after a setback

Those moments matter more than people realize.

At Serenity House, we see those quiet victories every single day. And we know they’re what build real, lasting change.

If you or someone you love is navigating recovery, keep going. You’re building something stronger than you think.

A love letter to the families of people in recovery.

You didn't cause it. You can't control it. You can't cure it.

But you CAN be part of the healing, and here's how:

• Educate yourself about addiction as a disease, not a moral failure.
• Learn your own limits, they're not selfish, they're necessary.
• Be a safe person to talk to, without lectures.
• Take care of your OWN mental health. You matter too.
• Celebrate every step forward, even the tiny ones

Recovery heals the whole family, not just the individual. Family support is part of everything we do.

Today, we remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is a reminder of sacrifice, courage, and the people who never made it home.

At Serenity House, we’re especially grateful for those who served and for the veterans in our community who continue fighting battles many people never see. We see your strength, and we thank you.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Today is the 110th running of the Indy 500!

In honor, here are some recovery metaphors:

You don't win by never crashing. You win by getting back on the track.
Every pit stop is a moment of support, not weakness.
The finish line isn't given, it's earned, lap by lap.

Whether you're watching from your couch or the stands, we hope today reminds you that the race you're running matters.

You ARE going to finish it.

Sueños Festival hits Chicago this weekend, and the energy is everything.

For those in recovery navigating big festival weekends, we see you. It can be a lot.

A few things that help:

• Stay hydrated, your sober body will thank you
• Go with your safe people
• Have your sponsor's number ready
• Know when you're leaving before you arrive
• Remember: the music is the reason you're there

When you get home safely? That's worth celebrating.

Have fun, Chicago. Stay safe.

Every person who walks through our doors has a story. And the ones who've walked back out, thriving, have stories that deserve to be heard.

At Serenity House, we're so proud of our alumni. The dads who made it back. The daughters who rebuilt trust. The professionals who reclaimed their careers. The parents who got to see their kids grow up.

Recovery is possible. And real. And happening right now in DuPage and Kane County, in our halfway houses, in our outpatient groups, and in the everyday lives of people who chose a different path.

Know a Serenity House alumnus with a story worth sharing? Email us, we'd love to feature their journey (with permission).

Best Practices to Be Your Best Sober Self

Sobriety isn't just the absence of substances, it's the presence of a new life. Here are evidence-backed practices our counselors recommend:

1. Build a Morning Routine
Structure your day before the day structures you. Even 10 minutes of intentional morning activity can anchor your mindset.

2. Stay Connected to Your Support Network
Isolation is one of the leading relapse triggers. Make regular contact with your sponsor, therapist, or recovery group non-negotiable.

3. Move Your Body
Exercise releases natural dopamine, the same chemical hijacked by addiction. Even a 20-minute walk matters.

4. Journal Your Progress
Expressive writing reduces anxiety and increases self-awareness. Write what you're grateful for, even on hard days.

5. Set One Small Goal Per Day
Big goals feel overwhelming. Small wins build momentum.
