Mr. Phillip A. Groom, 84 of Adel, Georgia passed away October 16, 2026 at home after a 5 1/2 year battle with esophageal cancer. He faced it the way he faced everything, with humor, grit and a deep love of life.

Phillip was born on November 10, 1941, in Weymouth, England, to Harry Edward Groom and Iris Doreen Frances Harrison Groom. He was the third of six children. He played semi-professional soccer for Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester, and remained a devoted fan of Liverpool Football Club for the rest of his life. He also liked to tell people he saw the Beatles play in a bar before they were the Beatles.

In his early career, Phillip served in the British Merchant Navy. A printer by trade, he kept busy over the years as an insurance salesman, golf course manager, and car salesman. He was elected twice to the Nashville, Georgia City Council and was a Mason and Shriner. He was a true character, a jokester who could make the room laugh and never met a stranger.

Philip came to the United State in 1966, and his life changed on a blind date with Mary Janice Taylor. They Married just four months later on April 2, 1967, and their love story lasted 59 years.

Phillip was most proud of his family above all. He is survived by his wife, Janice of Adel; his son, Stephen Groom, and daughter-in-law, Shea of Hahira, Georgia; his daughter, Sonya Cater, and son-in-law, Tim of Williamsburg, Virginia; his four grandchildren, who called him "Papa": Autumn Reese Cater, Addison Groom, Aniston Groom and Carson Cater. He is also survived by his brothers, Eric, Roger and Roland Groom all of Weymouth, England; and his sister Cynthia Groom Fry of Dorchester, England. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Iris Groom, and his brother, Gerald.

In keeping with Mr. Groom's wishes he was cremated and there will be no formal services held. There will be a visitation with the family from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at Boone Funeral Home, 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave. in Adel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of South Georgia, to help others as much as they helped Phillip during his last few months of life. Glenn Elliott Walden

February 21, 1946 – October 11, 2026

Born in Marianna, Florida, Glenn was the fifth of five children born to Grace and Otis Walden. His older siblings were Ted, Esther, Don, and Barbara, and he later welcomed his bonus brothers, Edmund and Robert.

After the death of his mother, Grace, he was lovingly raised by his Granny on the family farm. He loved to recall what it was like growing up there and the daily chores he performed. His pig call was one of the best you could have heard. He also learned to whistle so loudly that every animal could hear him. That came in handy later when cheering for his Gators.

In Glenn’s early years, he spent time playing sports and “tussling” as he would say with brothers and cousins once getting a tooth knocked out in horseplay. He grew up in the church where his daddy preached and was baptized in the creek just down from the farm, the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the Lord.

Glenn excelled in school and graduated high school at 16 as valedictorian. He also participated in Future Farmers of America which planted the seeds for what would become his career. He spent two years at Chipola Jr. College and then made his way to The University of Florida - the first Gator in a family of Seminoles which made family Thanksgivings even more fun. He earned his degree in Agriculture Economics and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, a fraternity that gave him lifelong brothers and friends in addition to amazing college memories and future colleagues.

He began his career with the United States Department of Agriculture after graduating from UF and spent 40 years dedicating his life to building communities thru Economic Development. He later loved explaining Rural America to his girls and pointing out the projects he played a part in across the State of Florida.

Glenn also began his career with the National Guard after graduating from UF and was honored to serve for more than forty years in the army, eventually attending the War College and retiring as a Colonial.

While visiting his older brother, Ted Walden and sister-in-law, Joan, in Atlanta, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Louise Register. They were married in 1970 and began a journey that would take them to Marianna, FL, Gainesville, FL (three times), Washington, DC (three times) and Aiken, South Carolina. Along the way he was “blessed”, as he would say, “…with his two beautiful girls”, Amy Melissa Walden Drury and Kristen Ashley Walden Thomas.

Upon retirement in Valdosta, GA, he built a community of friends while being close to family he enjoyed seeing more often. He was also able to spend time on the sport he had always loved, golf, as well as volunteering in church ministries, doing mission trips domestically and abroad, serving as a deacon, being a member of the Outlaws Sunday School Class, leading the Military Officers Association of America, raising money in the community for causes he loved and spending lots of time with his four grandchildren who he absolutely adored - Cooper Blake Drury, Caroline Grace Drury, Cole Patrick Thomas and Vivian Reese Thomas.

No matter where he lived or how far away he was from Gainesville you could find him sitting in his season ticket North End Zone Row 20 seats at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium or pacing in front of a TV, watching his Gators play.

He lived his faith out every day, reaching out to others in need, participating in Billy Graham Ministries, serving as a disaster relief volunteer and Chaplin.

His life was big, just like his smile and laugh! He never met a stranger and cherished his time with family, especially with grandkids riding waves on a boogie board at the beach, playing basketball in the driveway, grabbing breakfast at Waffle House (especially his morning coffee), having late night ice cream with his granddaughters, and playing Old Maid.

Glenn leaves a legacy of love and faith and for that we are grateful.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Dorothy Louise Register Walden (of 56 years), his sister Esther Walden Holland and his brother Edmund Walden. His daughters, Amy Walden Drury (Blake Drury) and Kristen Walden Thomas (Sean Thomas), his grandchildren, Cooper Blake Drury, Caroline Grace Drury, Cole Patrick Thomas and Vivian Reese Thomas.

Funeral service will be held at 11:30 on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at First Baptist Church of Valdosta in Valdosta, Georgia with Rev. Mac Weaver officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 10:00 until 11:00 prior to the funeral service. Interment with military honors will take place at 1:00 PM on Monday, October 19, 2026 in Tallahassee, Florida at Tallahassee National Cemetery. Mrs. Glennis Sykes, 78, of Fernandina Beach, Florida, passed away on October 8, 2026 University of Florida Health System in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born in Tifton, Georgia, on March 24, 1948 and was the daughter of Glenn Powell and Winoma Norman Powell. Mrs. Sykes lived in Atlanta, Georgia for twenty years and the past ten in Florida. She was an educator, having taught fourth and fifth grade in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Mrs. Sykes was a member of Saint Brendan's Catholic Church in Cu***ng, Georgia. She loved to sing and sang throughout high school and college and later performed at weddings, business conferences and social events.

Mrs. Sykes is survived by her husband, Edward Sykes, Jr. of Fernandina Beach; two daughters and sons-in-law: Jennifer and Donald Gauthier of Jacksonville, Florida, and Meridith Sykes and Zach Swilling of Buford, Georgia; three grandchildren: Will McCarthy and Ellie McCarthy of Jacksonville, and Ansel Swilling of Buford; and a sister and brother-in-law, Lyn and Phil McKenzie. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sykes was preceded in death by three brothers: Charlie Powell, Ben Powell and Fred Powell.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 16, 2026 at Woodlawn City Cemetery in Adel, Georgia with Father Adam Kasela officiating. Interment will follow. Mrs. Sandra Frost, 75, of Sparks, Georgia, passed away on October 5, 2026 at Southwell Health and Rehabilitation Center in Adel, Georgia. She was born in Spangler, Pennsylvania on August 14, 1951 but has lived in Cook County the past forty years. Mrs. Frost's parents were the late Calvin George Boring, Sr. and the late Betty Jane Adams Boring. She was a Methodist and was a retired licensed practical nurse having served Smith Northview Hospital and Adel Memorial Hospital in South Georgia and Monsour Hospital in Jeanette, Pennsylvania, over her career.

Mrs. Frost is survived by her son, Evan Frost of Sparks; a granddaughter, Emiranda Lorielle Frost of Decatur, Georgia; two brothers and a sister: Calvin George Boring Jr., Kevin Boring and Donna Webb, all of Greensburg, Pennsylvania; special friend, sister-in-law and "Angel on Earth", Joyce Van Curan; and her "daughter by heart", Jessica Ottman. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Frost was preceded in death by her daughter, Emiranda Frost.

Mrs. Frost was cremated. A memorial service may be announced at a later date.

Mr. Wayne Thompson, 83, of Sparks, Georgia, passed away October 5, 2026 at his residence. Mr. Thompson was born on September 5, 1943 in Oxford, Florida to the late Albert Lewis Thompson and the late Ruby Blitch Thompson. He lived most of his life in Cook County and was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired truck driver for Bates Precast Concrete.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Shirley Nobles Thompson of Sparks; two daughters and sons-in-law; Cindy and Tim Meadows, Tiffany and Darien Cain, all of Sparks; four grandchildren: Erica and Kayla Meadows, Shawn and Claire Cain; Kyle Cain, all of Sparks, and Erin Bowman of Panama City, Florida; ten great grandchildren; Cole Southerland, Brylee Meadows, Emery Cain, Eden Cain, all of Sparks, Bren Russell, Keegan Russell, Willow Russell, Karleigh Russell, all of Hahira, Georgia, Maddox Alumbaugh and Lakelyn Alumbaugh, both of Panama City, Florida; four sisters: Wanda Childress of Ashville, North Carolina, Gail Stevens of Nashville, Georgia, Bonnie Holley and Susan Manders, both of Adel, Georgia.
A graveside service was held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at Spring Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Johnny Hendley officiating. Interment followed. Visitation was from from 10:00 to 10:45 AM, Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at Boone Funeral Home; 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave. "Go Rest High On That Mountain" was played at the service and Shawn Cain, Kyle Cain, Cole Southerland, Richard Palmer, Michael Thompson and Bobby Manders served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Cynthia Lynn Godwin, age 63, of Adel, Georgia, passed away on October 5, 2026 at Emory University Hospital - Midtown in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born on August 7, 1963 in Adel and lived her entire life there. Mrs. Godwin was a homemaker and a member of Antioch United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Godwin is survived by her husband, Durand Godwin of Adel; her four children: Lee Godwin, Chris and Heather Godwin, Tiffany Williams (Justin Siska), all of Adel, and Cameron Godwin of Nashville, Georgia; her mother, Elizabeth Hutchinson Taylor-Johnson of Sparks, Georgia; five grandchildren: Maebea Godwin and Raivyn Godwin, both of North Augusta, Georgia, Caidence Godwin of Valdosta, Georgia, Abby Godwin and Natalie Godwin, both of Adel; a brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Cindy Taylor of Valdosta; and a sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Ronnie Taylor of Sparks. She was preceded in death by her father, Johnny Ellis Taylor.
A private funeral service for Mrs. Godwin was held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 9, 2026 in the Chapel of Boone Funeral Home with Mr. Tim Taylor officiating. Connie Taylor sang “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” at the service.

Mr. Freddie Duren, 67, of Sparks, Georgia, passed away on October 1, 2026 at his residence. Mr. Duren was born on June 9, 1959 in Ocala, Florida to the late Lloyd Daniel Duren and the late Mildred "Red" Aultman Duren. He lived most of his life in Cook County and attended the Adel Church of God. He retired from the construction industry where he was self-employed.
Mr. Duren is survived by by his "Life Partner", Donna Lord of Sparks; son and daughter-in-law: Christopher and Megan Duren of Huntington, West Virginia; two daughters: Keshia Harris of Alapaha, Georgia and Christy Knight of Douglas, Georgia; one brother, Ryan Duren of Adel; two sisters: Brenda Castleberry of Moultrie, Georgia and Tammy Moore of Adel; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joan Sirmans.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at the Chapel of Boone Funeral Home with Rev. Ashley Way and Rev. Julian Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at the Chapel prior to the memorial service. In keeping with Mr. Duren's wishes, he was cremated.

Mr. Chris Allen Martin, 53, of Peachtree City, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2026. Chris was born September 2, 1973, in Hahira, Georgia, to the late Hellen and Leonard Martin, and grew up in Adel. Georgia grown with deep Southern roots, he attended Valdosta State University and earned his pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia. He went on to a successful career as a pharmacist for nearly 30 years.
Chris was pure-hearted, hardworking, loyal, and adventurous. To his family, he was simply their rock. Everything he did was for his wife and children. He was a provider in every way. Including a loving home and the greatest of adventures. He was a wonderful friend to so many. Praise God, he was a follower of Jesus.
Chris loved lake life and was happiest on a boat or scuba diving. He played pickleball, tennis, ping pong, chess, and poker, loved hiking with his wife, Emily, and enjoyed investing in real estate.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Martin of Peachtree City; his children, Luke Martin MD, Lyndsay Martin, Lance Martin, and Lily Martin; his stepsons, Landon Hirsch and Maddox Hirsch; his brothers, Bryan Martin and Doug Martin of Adel, and his nephew, Drew Martin; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Beverly and Brad Mate, and their daughters, Sophia, Bridget, and Molly, of Peachtree City; his sister-in-law, Cheryl Lundblad, and her daughters, Xanthe (Bam and son Atlas)and Azure, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and his mother-in-law, Janice Larson, and stepfather-in-law Anthony Drier, of Corpus Christi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hellen and Leonard Martin, sister-in-law Katrina Lyn Martin, and father-in-law Gary Lundblad.
A funeral service and graveside prayer will be held on Sunday, October 4th at 4pm at Adel Church of God with Rev. Ashley Way officiating. Visitation will take place at the church beginning at 3pm prior to the service. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Louise Hendley, 90 of Adel, Georgia passed away on September 29, 2026 at Berrien Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Nashville, Georgia. Mrs. Hendley was born on July 11, 1936 in Cook County to the late Joseph Bryant Cowart and the late Minnie Leola Akridge Cowart. She lived most of her life in Cook County and was a member of the Cecil Baptist Church. Mrs. Hendley was a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired from the Berrien Nursing Center in Nashville.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Johnny and Wanda Hendley, Jr. of Cecil, Georgia; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Paula McIntyre, Sherry and Ricky Young, Amy and Dewade Bostic, all of Adel; son-in-law, Ronald "Cotton" Hewitt of Adel; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law; Johnny and Emily Cowart of Lenox, Georgia; two sisters-in-law: Naomi Cowart of Adel and Joan Cowart of New York, New York. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Rev John C. Hendley, Sr., and her daughter, Carol Hewitt.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at the Chapel of Boone Funeral Home with Rev. Johnny Hendley, Jr. officiating and an eulogy given by her granddaughter, Sarah Bostic. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will take place from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Boone Funeral Home; 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave. in Adel, immediately prior to the funeral service. Macey Edwards and Anna Gosier will sing "Amazing Grace"; other special music will include recordings of "Suppertime" and "Beulah Land". Mrs. Nancy Ivey Boone, 81, of Valdosta passed away on September 18, 2026. Mrs. Boone was born on August 25, 1945 in Valdosta. She lived most of her life in Lowndes County and was of the Methodist Faith. She was retired from the Credit Bureau of Valdosta where she served as the Marketing Manager.
Mrs. Boone is survived by her husband of 59 years, Vance Boone; her daughter and son-in-law, Micki and Mike Krzynski; son and daughter-in-law, Brett and Susan Boone, all of Valdosta; two grandsons: Jake and Tesa Krzynski of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Bennett Boone of Valdosta; her nephew, Michael Winn of Jacksonville, Florida; special cousins: Sandra Milhollin of Atlanta, Georgia; Gail Morley of Newnan, Georgia and Deborah Metts of Valdosta. She was preceded in death by her mother, Edna McKie Ivey and her sister, Barbara Jean Winn Forte.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, September 21, 2026 at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with Dr. Dennis Stalvey officiating. Woodlawn Memorial Gardens is located at 8879 Val-Del Road in Adel, Georgia.
