Common Summer Rashes in Kids (and How to Tell Them Apart)

Summer means more time outside—but it also brings a spike in skin rashes. Here’s how to recognize the most common ones and know when to treat at home vs. call your provider.

Heat Rash (Prickly Heat):
Looks like tiny red or pink bumps, often on the neck, chest, or skin folds. It’s caused by blocked sweat glands in hot, humid weather.

What to do: Keep skin cool and dry, use lightweight clothing, and avoid heavy creams.

Contact Dermatitis:
Red, itchy, sometimes blistering rash after contact with an irritant (like plants, sunscreen, or soaps). Usually appears exactly where the skin touches the trigger.

What to do: Gently cleanse, avoid the irritant, and use a mild topical steroid if needed.

Bug Bite Reactions:
Raised, itchy bumps—sometimes larger or more swollen in kids who are sensitive. Common on exposed areas like arms and legs.

What to do: Anti-itch creams, cool compresses, and oral antihistamines if needed.

Swimmer’s Itch:
An itchy, bumpy rash that appears after swimming in lakes or ponds. Often shows up on exposed skin not covered by a swimsuit.

What to do: Rinse skin after swimming and use soothing lotions or antihistamines for itching.

When to Call:
If the rash is spreading quickly, painful, blistering, accompanied by fever, or not improving within a few days, it’s best to have it evaluated.
