Joan Helen James, age 89, of Lapeer, MI (recently Austin, TX), passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

Joan was born on January 5, 1937, in Pontiac, Michigan, the daughter of Joseph Lafayette and Helen Clamania (Goodrich) Wagley. Her older brother, Joseph Wagley, Jr. nicknamed her “Sissy,” a moniker she proudly bore throughout her youth. Joan graduated from Pontiac High School and went on to earn a degree from Eastern Michigan University.

Joan was an English teacher, drama director, and, in early life, a juvenile detention officer. As such, she spent much of her life working with people, and, in one capacity or another, attempting to correct them. Her later years were distinguished by an extraordinary succession of discovering activities for other people to undertake. For Joan, there were always crafts to be made, trivia nights to host, Olympic games to run, and nearby bodies to put to work.

Through her teaching, theatrical productions, and countless games and gatherings, Joan created connections and gave people reasons to come together. Within her community, she was known as a one-woman welcome wagon. She leaves behind not only the many people who cared for her, but also the friendships, traditions, and memories she helped create. It will be hard to imagine a world without Joan James running it.

Mark E. Gentry passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Adrian, Michigan, at the age of 77, surrounded by his three children.

He was born on August 5, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Rose and Eugene Gentry. Mark had a quick wit, a healthy dose of sarcasm, and his own unique way of looking at the world. Lighthearted and easygoing, he enjoyed life’s simple pleasures to the fullest, always making good out of an ordinary day. Mark loved cars and spending time in nature. Early mornings often meant a cup of coffee and the quiet company of birds. His porch or a spot in the yard was a favorite place to spend the day, taking in his surroundings and greeting people as they passed by.

Mark’s life held many chapters; some were joyful, some were difficult, and some were unexpected. Each was part of the story of a man who lived, loved, lost, and kept going.

Mark is survived by his three children, Jennifer (Brandon) Farver, Joshua Gentry, and Elizabeth (Matt Cross) Gentry; and his siblings, Gary Gentry, Greg Gentry, Cindy Harris, Diane (Jim) Taylor, and Jeff (Lora) Gentry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Eugene Gentry; the mother of his children, Susan Gentry; his sister, Kimberly Gentry; and his brother, Todd Gentry.

ONSTED- Charlotte “Ruth” Westgate, age 84, passed away early on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Charles & Virginia Hickman Hospital in Adrian.
Ruth was born on November 28, 1941, in Tecumseh, MI, the daughter of James and Marjoria (Doriell) Brooks. There was a lot of excitement and activity in the family home as Ruth was the fifth child out of eight. Everyone learned how to share and work together from an early age. Ruth graduated from Tecumseh High School
Little did Ruth know that the neighbor boy who lived on the other side of the orchard and threw apples at her would end up being her husband. On May 19, 1962, after many years of being neighbors, rivals, friends and then sweethearts Ruth married William “Bill” R. Westgate. They were blessed with three children, grandchildren and a lifetime of good memories during their 47 years together. Bill passed away on January 9, 2010.
Ruth worked as a Youth Specialist at the Adrian Training Center for 33 years, influencing the lives of many young adults. She was a long-time member of North Rome Baptist Church where she previously served on the church board and helped with funeral dinners. Ruth loved to spend her free time reading, fishing and going on many wonderful road trips with her girlfriends. There is a family story that tells how Ruth went out West elk hunting with her brother, Tom and son, Bill but never fired her gun; choosing to just enjoy nature and the wide-open territory. ADRIAN- Linda Darlene Remmele, age 79 of Adrian, passed away on October 19, 2026, at the Lenawee Medical Care Facility surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice of Lenawee. She was just 9 days shy of celebrating her 80th birthday.

Linda was born on October 28, 1946, in Adrian to Jerome and Bessie (Paulsen) Reed. She graduated from Addison High School. On May 22, 1971, she married Dennis L. Remmele who preceded her in death on January 21, 2005.

She was a housekeeper at Provincial House for 13 years before working at Meijer in the seafood department before a stroke forced her into retirement in 2005. In their earlier years, Linda and Dennis bowled in leagues around the area. They enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre and Rummy, with friends and family members. Linda liked listening to country music and being the family photographer where she took many pictures over the years. She was a strong willed and generous person whose “door was always open” to anyone in need. Linda’s facial expressions told her story and how she felt about people. Above all else, Linda will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

BLISSFIELD – Betty D. Thompson, age 91, of Blissfield, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Bridgeway Park.

She was born November 23, 1934, in Blissfield, the oldest child of George and Helen (Heck) Davis, and graduated from Blissfield High School with the Class of 1953.

On October 15, 1955, Betty married Harold Thompson at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riga. This began an adventure that lasted 64 years and included raising four daughters, being a farmer’s wife, and attending countless grandchildren’s sporting events.

Betty was well known from her many years working at Jipson State Bank. She touched many lives with her smile and laughter. When she wasn’t spending time with her family, Betty could be found reading or having fun at a casino. She was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riga.

Surviving Betty are her daughters, Deanna (Mike) Goddyn, Linda (David) Gates, and Karen (Joe) Brown; her siblings, Lawrence Davis and Helen Hettinger; nine grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Harold, she was preceded in death by their daughter, Cheryl Wahl.

Funeral services for Betty will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, October 23, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riga with Pastor Benjamin Roekle officiating. Burial will follow at Riga Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Wagley Funeral Home Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. and again Friday at the church from 10 a.m....

ADRIAN- Jeanne L. Caris, age 92, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2026. She was born and raised in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Harry and Margaretta (Busler) Maggs

Growing up, Jeanne’s neighbor was a music teacher who got tired of hearing her banging on the piano through the open windows, so he taught her how to play. Music would become a big part of Jeanne’s life. As a young teen and thru early adulthood, Jeanne played for church services, vacation bible school (VBS) and Sunday schools. Later in 1985, Jeanne filled in as the organist for the First Baptist Church in Adrian for the Christmas Eve service. A position she would hold for 25 years until it’s closure in 2010.

Graduating from Jersey Shore High School Class of 1952, Jeanne went on to attend Bob Jones University for one year. It was there that she met and married Charles Rader in 1954. Together they had a daughter, Debbie. Sadly, Charles passed in 1956. Enter Marlin R. Caris, a boy from one of those earlier VBS sessions, who was now in the Navy. Marlin’s mother informed him of Jeanne’s husband passing and he decided to send her a sympathy card. (Marlin would later say it was the only “decent” thing he ever did in his life). Jeanne wrote back (saying it was “only polite”). A correspondence was established and a friendship renewed. They married in 1961 and together raised a family of four kids, enjoying 56 years of marriage until his passing in 2017.

William Alfred Osborn, age 83, of Adrian, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2026, at Hospice of Lenawee, surrounded by his loving children.

Born on December 20, 1942, to William Charles and Rosemary Helen (Skok) Osborn, Bill grew up in Ithaca, Michigan, and graduated with the Ithaca High School Class of 1960. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army.

On February 28, 1971, Bill married Susan Duncan, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Together, they never hesitated to open their home and hearts to family in need. Susan preceded him in death on April 19, 2016. Bill dedicated many years of service to Brazeway before enjoying a well-earned retirement. He went on to work as a greeter at Walmart to keep busy during his retirement years.

Bill was an avid sports fan of all Detroit teams as well as the Michigan State Spartans. He especially loved baseball. Bill spent most of his time organizing, coaching and scorekeeping for his son Travis’s travel baseball teams. Bill was also very active with American Legion Post 275 baseball team, where he developed a system for tracking player statistics and records that is still used today.

Bill enjoyed boating, water skiing, fishing, and camping with family. He loved dogs and could often be seen walking his beloved Rottweiler, Rocky, around town or with his pugs snuggled on his lap. Bill was also an avid reader, often spending hours on his porch lost in a good book.

HUDSON- Ronnie William Byers, age 67, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Ronnie was born on October 8, 1958, in Adrian, MI, one of four children to John and Deana (Green) Byers. He proudly graduated as a Hudson Tiger with the Class of 1977.

On July 31, 1981, Ronnie was united in marriage to Sherrie L. Ellis in Adrian. They have been fortunate to share over 48 years together, raise two children and wear the title of grandparents!

Ronnie was employed with RIMA Manufacturing in Hudson as a screw machine operator. He loved to cook for his family and took his role as “Grill Master” very seriously. Ronnie was known for his world-famous grilled hamburgers and amazing BBQ ribs, he also had an extensive collection of cast iron cookware. Ronnie liked to spend his free time outdoors whether it was mowing the lawn or tending to his garden where he took great pride in his tomatoes and watermelons. He enjoyed watching Gunsmoke, the Goon Squad and WWE wrestling and UFC on TV and traveling up North with his family. Ronnie could also be found out on the open road driving his Chevy Camaro.

HUDSON- Donald Gene Evans, age 84, of Hudson, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2026, surrounded by his family at the Hospice of Lenawee Home.
Don was born on March 3, 1942, in Gattman, Mississippi, the son of Willie and Onnie (Johnson) Evans. After graduating from High School, Don went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force for 4years.
After returning to civilian life, Don worked for General Motors as a pipefitter; where he retired after a long productive career.
On August 13, 1988, Don married Deana Joyce (Green) Smith in Palmyra, MI. They celebrated over 26 years together before her passing on July 8, 2015. Don and Deana were all about family and holiday gatherings took on a whole new level of excitement with their two blended families.
Don liked to keep his mind sharp and was always working on a crossword puzzle or two. He was a lifelong golfer and never failed to provide his opinion on the condition of various golf courses throughout Lenawee County. Don’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he faithfully attended their school activities and never missed a birthday party.
