First Responder Mental Wellbeing is the catalyst for why I created Brave Start Stables.

It grew out of my own experience when faced with difficulty on the job and the poor response received from leadership.

If you are or love a first responder, normalize this conversation.

You are still capable, strong, and of service when the realities of life or the job impact you.

If you are looking for a safe space to talk, to heal, to just breathe…reach out to us.

Completely confidential. Not therapy. No labels. Just someone who has worn the uniform and understands.

Just for today, this moment, remind yourself of one obstacle you’ve overcome in life to get exactly where you are.

There’s power in sharing our successes.

Horses require congruency to feel safe.

But what exactly does that mean?

And how does being congruent help me in my every day life?

Have you ever asked someone “How are you?”

And they respond, “I’m fine” through tense lips and a furrowed brow.

Or maybe you’ve had a loss and are still grieving and you put on a happy face because you are the strong one and everyone looks to you for support.

Maybe you’re in a new relationship and he asks you to meet his parents. Inside you’re shaking like a leaf, but you play it cool so he won’t know.

These are all example of incongruency in human relationships.

Horses ask us to show up authentically as we are.

In other words, our verbal and non-verbal communication mirrors the other.

If you’re scared, be scared.
If you’re sad, be sad.

Feel your feelings.

Learning to notice and respond to our feelings authentically fosters safety in our relationship with the horse….and enhances our human relationships.

Just one of the many answers to “Why horses”?

How do you engage in relationships?

Withdraw when conflict hits? Lash out? Stay quiet just to keep things smooth?

That’s not who you are — that’s your nervous system’s default setting. Our herd doesn’t respond to the performance, only the state you’re actually in — and a regulated horse can help pull you into a calmer one too.

That’s where the work starts. Find your voice with us today.

I am grateful for the variety of voices in meditation practice.

Today’s selection was reminiscent of Olivia Newton John’s role as Sandy in Grease.

Although I found the Australian accent calming, I did have to refrain from singing Summer Nights in my head.

Experience matters. Evidenced based practice matters.

Nowadays where everyone has a “certification” for everything — seemingly everyone’s an “expert”.

Despite my credentials and experience - clinically and personally, I despise the word “expert.”

Expert implies mastery and I truly believe we are always learning. Works in progress.

I’m still walking my path, still learning and growing.

As part of my process I sought a proven, best in class certified coaching program to enhance my skills and bring needed professionalism into a crowded space of equine assisted services.

When you’re looking for a collaborative partnership whether this includes horses or health and wellness coaching, the quality and time required to learn and practice matter.

Ask details about the time spent, how long did it take you to complete that course? How much practice hours were included?

I’m proud to say that every certification course I’ve taken was through that lens.

I don’t take it lightly how privileged I am to witness and be invited into vulnerable spaces with horses and humans.

Have a question? Ask me. I’m an open book.

Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep grinding.
