My Pops visits me in the perfect moments. Today I was writing a talk I’m giving in DC, and Poppa’s birth year came up (1917, the same year Yogananda’s guru asked him to plan and open a school for Yoga in Ranchi, India).
The second I thought, “wow. That’s when Poppa was born.” (He passed in 2009)…
My cousin Katie posted pics of her adorable family climbing to the top of Pops’ lighthouse. We call it “his” because he led the charge to raise the funds to save it in the ‘80’s. Fire Island Lighthouse on Long Island, NY.
There’s a quote of my Grandfather’s in the little museum lobby there. You can swipe through to see it. 👉🏼
What gobsmacked me a bit, was that I hadn’t read his quote in many years, and it is so similar to what I wrote in Permission to Glow— that although lighthouses may have outlived their utility, they are warm, stabilizing beacons in our ever-changing world.
So, as I connected with my yoga lineage, I got reconnected with my family lineage. And realized for the thousandth time just how influential Luis E. Bejarano was in my life, in my parenting, and in my work.
Water the roots. In your yoga, in your family, in all you learn and all you teach. Your lineage lives on and teaches through you.
