I've been uncomfortable just to keep somebody else comfortable more times than I care to admit.

Stayed at the party when I was ready to go. Let a conversation drag on because I couldn't figure out how to end it without being an as***le. Kept answering calls I didn't want to answer. Kept people around because cutting them loose felt cruel, even when having them around felt worse.

And I don't think I was trying to be some great person. I just really hated the idea of somebody thinking I was rude.

That's a stupid reason to be miserable.

I'm still polite. I still care about people's feelings. I'm just finally figuring out that mine get a vote too.

And if that makes me a little rude sometimes, I can live with that.

Some people could hand you a recipe with every single step written down and you'd still never make it taste like theirs.

My grandma was five foot nothing, pure Irish, flame-red hair, usually a cigarette in her mouth and a wh***ey on the rocks somewhere close. Mean as hell to most of the world, but somehow I made the very short list of people she liked.

She could walk into a kitchen and make just about anything in what felt like 25 seconds, but her fried chicken was the one. I've had plenty of good fried chicken since. I've made plenty of good fried chicken since. None of it tastes like hers.

And I think that's where food and memory get tangled up.

Maybe yours is your mom's spaghetti, your dad's barbecue, an aunt's pie, your grandpa's breakfast or something an old partner used to make on a random Tuesday night. You can get the recipe right. You can even get the taste pretty damn close.

But you can't recreate who was sitting at the table, what that house sounded like or who you were back then.

Sometimes that's the part you've been trying to taste again.
