Driving by the family home en route to the cemetery is a great custom.

On the way to the cemetery the hearse went past the house one more time, and slowed down.

It was almost never the shortest route. The funeral director knew to do it and did not have to be asked twice, and every driver in the line behind him understood exactly what the pause meant. He went past his own front door once more before the ground. 🕊️

The neighbors were already outside. Women on the sidewalk with rosaries wound around their hands, men with their hats held against their chests, and the ones who could not walk that far standing at the window with the curtain pulled back. Nobody organized any of it. They heard the cars and they came out.

Underneath it is an idea we have mostly lost, which is that a person belongs to a street and not only to a family. The house had to see him go. So did the block.
