Showed up at this race with big goals.

I decided to carry my phone and wear my earbuds so that I could keep track of my miles splits. The plan was to try for 6:45 miles, and have some time in the bank when I got to the tougher stretch. Up until about 25k I was on track. From 18-20 there were some inclines. The inclines were not anything crazy, but I quickly found myself falling behind on my pace.

Luckily math is hard at 20 miles in, but I knew my margin was closing. Still, right up until the finish, I believed I could do it.

When I crossed the line, I immediately reached over for the railing and doubled over. I left everything out there, and didn’t reach my goal.

But, I know I have more.

It is amazing to believe in yourself. Believe in your training. Believe in your body. Believe there is more.

Running doesn’t just change your body. It changes how you see the world. How you show up in the world. It changes your chemistry.

It’s raining.

This week, I completed my last 20 mile run, in preparation for my next marathon. The core of my work is complete and I have fought hard to get where I am.

But, it hasn’t come without diversity. Particularly when it comes to weather. I can deal with the snow and cold and rain, but please, don’t give me wind! NOT THE WIND.

Over the weekend I was pondering the weather with my dad and that conversation spiraled into crisis of variables. What would I wear for the marathon? What gels would I use? Where would my dad be on the course? And please god…. No wind.

Midway through the conversation, my dad became quiet. I asked if he was still there, to which replied, “Could you just enjoy the run?”

Oh yeah! I almost forgot….

Last week was winter break and for the first time, I planned almost nothing.

The kids went to basketball camp for a few hours in the morning, and the rest of the day was left to chance!
We watched movies, read books, deep cleaned bedrooms and planned yummy dinners.

We talked about going to the movies, we talked about going to the Y to swim, we talked about ice skating and sledding …. But we never went.

I was waiting for the moment where they would tell me they were bored, but it never came.

Today in the car, Devin said “it’s fun just hanging out together.” 🥹

At that moment, I vowed to myself that I would stop constantly planning things to do. They don’t need it. They don’t need to be entertained all the time.

Sometimes it’s nice for everyone to just rest. Be present with one another. Do nothing.

Most things in life are generally pretty simple, but they are not easy.

Stop expecting things to be easy.

If you want it, you have to be willing to fight for it.

And not just once.

There are no days off.

Quick PSA

I am a badass 44 year old woman (lol), and it was definitely NOT January 1st that made it so.

What I mean is, do not get caught up in this day. It is just a day. It is not the beginning and it is not the end.

Every day, hour, minute and second is an opportunity. And you are going to need LOTS of those if you plan to meet your goals.

Many of the days will be bad. But when you start stacking them up you will realize they are ALL victories. Baby steps in the right direction.

So, if today wasn’t it…. You always have tomorrow. And the next day and the next day and the next day.

Keep showing up. Anything is possible.
