Horses do not receive a Rabies tag or certificate as with companion animals. NO. it is not seasonal. NO. It is not available OTC. YES. AURAL SARCOIDS. Find them early. Treat them early with debulking and chemotherapy for the best longterm results. I cannot emphasize enough. They are not JUST sarcoids. Horses can lose their ears.

Do you see the charts for facial pain scoring when you are patiently waiting in the ER? There is similar recognition in horses. Horses are prey animals and are keenly aware of their environment. They are alert with eyes and ears up and relaxed musculature. Our task is to recognize subtle differences in comfort level and behavior, to be in prevention mode.

Lets take colic for example. Observe at a distance. Are they standing back/aloof, not engaging? Look for nostril flare. Eyes and ears down. Head and neck low. An anxious look, a grimace. Tense masticatory muscles. A look of lethargy or depression.

Know what normal is for your horse so that you are able to detect subtle clinical signs of pain and many times prevent a full blown episode.
