Bobbie Marie Oliver Hobby of Sylvester, Georgia (born July 12, 1936) went to be with the Lord on October 15, 2026.

It’s an impossible task to take 90 years of life and whittle moves, births, deaths, jobs, hobbies, friendships, family down to just a few words. But for Bobbie, three things stand out as important to her: family, hospitality, and living fully.

FAMILY- Bobbie loved her family. She loved visiting with them and boasting about them was her favorite topic of conversation. Her house was filled with pictures of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She wanted to be surrounded by her family.

HOSPITALITY- Bobbie was a gracious host. She enjoyed hosting holidays (especially Thanksgiving!), work colleagues of her husband, Jim, and friends for games. She also spent time volunteering at her church for Wednesday night dinners and other events making sure that the spaces were welcoming for people.

LIVING FULLY- Joining her life to Jim in May 1954, Bobbie was off on an adventure. Their life together took them through many moves to several states before they settled back home in Southwest Georgia. Once they came back and were retired, they still adventured by starting an ostrich and emu farm. When Jim passed away in 1997, Bobbie said, “He died. I didn’t.” And she continued to live her life spending time with friends, traveling around the country, and caring for people including her grandchildren and her mother. Her...

Miles Edwin Martin was born April 30, 1938 in Andalusia, Alabama to Miles Truman Martin and Mary Estelle Phillips. He was the first of three sons (brothers Robert Martin and Ricky Martin). The family moved between Alabama and Florida for years, sometimes working as share-croppers on a cotton farm, where they also grew corn, peanuts, and soybeans. His chores at age 7 were: gather eggs, chop and stack wood, milk cows, clean out mule stalls, rake the yard, check the coals in the smokehouse, and fetch water from a spring 2 miles away (before they dug the well.) He recalled working in the cotton fields “from dark to dark,” starting before the sun had risen and not quitting until it had set again. They would go to the garden and pick an onion and a tomato, and eat them like apples on the way to school with a handful of salt. Their mom would send their lunch in a lard pail with cardboard between the layers of peas and beans, meat, biscuits, and dessert, which they would eat in the woods. They had kerosene lamps, outhouses, a pump, a well, and a woodstove. He always said he grew up in the 1800’s even though he lived in the 1940’s.
He grew up tough and well suited for the US Marine Corps, where he served for more than 20 years and earned many medals and ribbons (which his father referred to as “fruit salad” on his uniform.)
Though widely remembered as a formidable Drill Instructor and Senior D.I.—a tour spanning about four years where he turned down...
