In recognition of National Trauma Survivors Day, Albany Medical Center’s Adult and Pediatric Trauma Programs invited trauma survivors and their families to celebrate their recovery. The inaugural event honored the 4,500 trauma cases that come through the region’s only Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center each year and the medical professionals who care for them.

Four survivors spoke about their experiences and thanked members of their care team.

Mary Edwards, MD, division chief of pediatric surgery and the medical director of the pediatric trauma program, told the survivors they are why the trauma team does what they do, and thanked them for returning to campus, saying, “You show us that what we do, it matters.”

Two years ago, Albany Medical Center was the first hospital in upstate New York to implant a device intended to improve stroke patients’ upper limb mobility. Since then, 25 Albany Med patients have received the Vivistim device, reporting measurable gains in hand and arm function. Additional occupational therapists have been trained to help patients work with the device in both Albany and Glens Falls – expanding the program to benefit even more patients throughout the Albany Med Health System.

In a first in upstate New York, Albany Medical Center has implanted a device intended to improve arm and hand function in patients who have experienced a debilitating stroke.
