We had such a great time visiting a local UPK program in Cohoes to teach bike and helmet safety! 🚲⛑️

The students learned about the importance of wearing a helmet every time they ride, how helmets help protect their brains, and ways to stay safe while biking. Through hands-on activities and demonstrations, the kids had so much fun learning about safety!

Thanks to the generosity of Harding & Mazzotti, every child in the UPK program received a brand-new bike helmet to take home. We also want to thank Safe Kids Worldwide for providing our coalition with a bike safety grant that helped us bring interactive teaching materials and injury prevention education into the classroom.

We are so grateful for community partnerships that help keep kids safe and make injury prevention education possible! 💙

May is Safe Kids Month! Safe Kids Month is a national celebration dedicated to inspiring parents to take simple steps that help keep their kids safe as they get ready for summer. Preventable injuries are the number one cause of death among children ages 1-19 in the U.S., and millions more are injured in ways that can affect them for a lifetime.

Throughout the month, experts from our nearly 400 Safe Kids coalitions across the country will work directly with children, families, and caregivers in their communities to provide tips, information, and safety devices. Your Albany Med Health System Injury Prevention Outreach Team was out and about in Troy, NY and via Zoom with the greater NY Capital District Ski Council. We once again provided an informative, comprehensive presentation on the many ways to prepare and help ensure that they have a safe and enjoyable winter sports season for both adults and children.

Traveling with your little one this holiday season? Ensure a safe sleep environment no matter where you go. While you might be fine sleeping on the couch or an air mattress, make sure your baby always sleeps in a safe crib, bassinet or pack-n-play. Whether it's a hotel, a relative’s house, or a vacation rental, remember to follow these simple tips for safe sleep:
- Choose a firm mattress and fitted sheet for baby’s crib.
- Remove toys, blankets, pillows, bumper pads and other accessories from the crib.
- Share your room, not your bed.
- Practice safe sleep for naps and at night.

Working hard to make sure ALL kids are able to ride safely in the capital region.

Your Albany Med Injury Prevention Outreach Team is excited to assist with the nationally renowned Safe Travel for All Children (STAC) course at Niskayuna Fire District #2. This certification covers best practices in transporting children with special health care needs. In our class this week, we have skilled Child Passenger Safety Technicians from 11 counties from across New York State and we are pleased to have 8 of our own dedicated, caring professionals from the Albany Med NICU and Albany Med Occupational Therapy in attendance. This additional training will help them continue to provide the best possible care for our most vulnerable patients, especially on discharge and afterwards.
