Job Title: Direct Support Professional
Hourly Rate: $11.00 PCA 90-day review
Hourly Rate $12 CNA -90-day review
Duties of a Residential DSP:
For an overnight 8:00 PM–8:00 AM shift, a Direct Support Professional (DSP) focuses on ensuring the health, safety, comfort, and well-being of individuals while promoting independence and following each person’s Individual Service Plan (ISP), Behavior Support Plan (BSP), and Healthcare Plan.
Typical Duties (8:00 PM – 8:00 AM)
8:00 PM – 10:00 PM: Evening Routine
Receive shift report from outgoing staff.
Review communication log, ISP goals, physician orders, and any alerts.
Greet individuals and assess their overall health and mood.
Assist with dinner cleanup (if applicable).
Assist with:
Bathing/showering
Oral hygiene
Toileting/incontinence care
Dressing for bed
Administer or assist with medications (if authorized).
Encourage hydration and light snacks if appropriate.
Complete ISP goals scheduled for the evening.
Provide companionship and social interaction.
10:00 PM – 6:00 AM: Overnight Monitoring
Ensure all individuals are safely in bed.
Conduct routine health and safety checks according to agency policy (for example, every 2 hours or as required by the individual’s supervision level).
Monitor for:
Breathing and general well-being
Seizure activity
Falls
Wandering or elopement risks
Behavioral concerns
Medical emergencies
Assist individuals who wake during the night.
Provide toileting assistance as needed.
Change incontinent briefs and linens when necessary.
Reposition individuals who require turning to prevent pressure injuries.
Maintain a quiet, clean, and safe environment.
Complete light housekeeping:
Laundry
Disinfect high-touch surfaces
Clean bathrooms
Organize common areas
Restock supplies
Document all observations and services provided.
6:00 AM – 8:00 AM: Morning Routine
Wake individuals according to their schedules.
Assist with:
Toileting
Showering
Grooming
Oral care
Dressing
Prepare or assist with breakfast.
Assist with morning medications (if authorized).
Ensure mobility equipment is available and functioning.
Prepare individuals for work, day programs, medical appointments, or transportation.
Make beds and tidy bedrooms.
Complete final documentation.
Give a thorough verbal and written shift report to incoming staff.
Throughout the Shift
Protect client rights, dignity, and confidentiality (HIPAA).
Follow person-centered practices.
Implement behavior support plans when needed.
Respond appropriately to emergencies.
Report incidents immediately according to agency policy.
Maintain accurate documentation.
Keep the home secure by locking doors and monitoring visitors.
Observe for changes in physical or mental condition and notify the appropriate supervisor or nurse.

Arrive on time and ready for duty.

Follow all agency, Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, Medicaid Waiver, and healthcare regulations.
An effective overnight DSP provides continuous supervision, ensures safety, supports personal care needs, maintains a clean and secure home, and prepares individuals for a successful start to the next day while accurately documenting all care provided.
