Understanding NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness & NAMI Athens

In this video, we take a closer look at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the important work it does to support individuals and families affected by mental illness.

We talk with board member, Anne Walker, a lifelong friend of Robert's, and a 2025 Tom Walker Impact Award winner for all her endless work to improve lives and the mental health of our community members. She is joined in conversation with Adrienne Nagy, a NAMI Southeast Ohio board member.

We’ll also highlight NAMI Athens, Ohio, and the ways the local organization connects people in our community with education, support, advocacy, and resources. From reducing stigma to helping people find community and understanding, NAMI plays an important role at both the national and local levels.

Whether you’re learning about NAMI for the first time or looking for mental health resources in the Athens, Ohio area, this video provides an introduction to the organization and its mission.

The loss of someone—or something—we love can be a sad and challenging time. Yet, with time, loss can become a memory we treasure.

Sadly, in late March of this year, we lost two very important equine and canine team members, William and Rowdy. In this video, we share treasured memories and heartfelt memorial expressive arts projects that our community here at Natural Freedom Wellness Center have shared in their honor.

An Old Chinese proverb states: “You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building a nest in your hair.”

Jodi Jones, PhD, RPT-S, LPCC-S, joins us to discuss the therapeutic perspective behind the idea of allowing sorrow to pass through our lives without letting it take up permanent residence.

William and Rowdy were deeply loved by many. Their presence touched our community, and their memories will remain a treasured part of our hearts forever. “Where there is deep grief, there was great love.” You both were loved by many and it was an honor to have witnessed and experienced your love being shared with so many in our community.

It started with "yes." Twenty years later...

Sometimes the biggest changes begin with a single word.

Twenty years ago, a licensed provider answered a call from a small rural community looking for professionals willing to partner with an equine specialist and a recreation therapist to create something that didn't yet exist—an equine-assisted services program that would serve individuals and families in the region.

What began with a simple "yes" grew into two decades of collaboration, innovation, and hope. This video reflects on the journey, the people who believed in the vision, the horses that became partners in healing and learning, and the countless lives touched along the way.

Join us as we look back on the beginnings of this unique program, celebrate its impact over the past 20 years, and honor the community that made it possible.
