Kirk and Kirklyn Johnson, twin African American brothers from Mississippi, have turned early silence into shared strength. Diagnosed with non-verbal autism at age three, the twin brothers faced a future where doctors said they might never speak.

Their parents, Shae and Stan, met the challenge with faith, speech therapy, early intervention, and music. Melody became the language that helped them learn, connect, and eventually find their voices.

Kirklyn has graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in music education. He led the alma mater and sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at commencement. Meanwhile, Kirk continues thriving in the university’s ACCESS program while serving as minister of music at their father’s local nonprofit.

Together, the brothers plan to use what music gave them to help other children discover the same confidence and connection.

By the age of 8, Darius McCollum had memorized the entire New York City subway map.

At 12, after being stabbed at school, the subway became his safe place. Transit workers noticed the quiet boy who knew every line, signal and station by heart. Over time, some taught him how the system worked, from switches and signals to operating procedures.

At 15, a subway driver who was feeling unwell handed Darius the controls of an E train. He drove six stations before he was arrested. Passengers reportedly never realized the teenager at the controls wasn’t an authorized employee.

It was the first of around 30 arrests.

Over the next four decades, Darius was repeatedly arrested for operating New York City subway trains, buses and even a Greyhound coach without permission.

He wore the uniform. Followed the schedules. Collected fares. He was never accused of intentionally hurting anyone or damaging the vehicles.

Darius is autistic, and trains have been his lifelong special interest. His lawyer has long argued that the justice system never knew how to respond to someone whose repeated offences were driven by an intense autistic interest rather than violence or financial gain.

He has now spent much of his adult life in prison or psychiatric facilities. More recently, advocates say he has been moved to a lower-security facility where he is doing much better.

His story continues to raise difficult questions about autism, support and what happens when someone’s greatest strength doesn’t fit within the system.
