Jennie Joseph, a certified professional midwife, is the founder of Commonsense Childbirth in Florida. She is working not only to transform maternity care in her area, but also to raise awareness about the national maternal health crisis and to address the systemic barriers that contribute to poor maternal health outcomes among women of color.
Last year, her school Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery became the first and only accredited midwifery school in the United States founded and run by a Black woman–a huge step in combatting disparities. As Jennie says, when it comes to maternal health, "You need to feel safe, you need to feel whole, you need to feel supported. People come here because they want to feel heard.”
