Why do we use horses in some of our counseling sessions?

Because sometimes healing happens differently when we step outside the traditional therapy room.

Horses are incredibly observant. They notice our body language, energy, movements, boundaries, and consistency—often responding to what we show before we ever find the words to explain what we feel.

Through Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy, clients may have opportunities to practice:

1. Building trust — Relationships with horses develop through patience, consistency, and respect.

2. Setting healthy boundaries — Horses provide immediate feedback about personal space, confidence, and communication.

3. Recognizing and regulating emotions — Being present with a horse can encourage clients to slow down, notice what is happening within themselves, and practice calming strategies.

4. Developing confidence — Accomplishing a task with an animal much larger than ourselves can create a powerful sense of capability.

5. Improving communication and relationships — Horses don’t care about the perfect words. They respond to clarity, consistency, and authenticity.

6. Learning through experience — Instead of only talking about coping skills, problem-solving, relationships, or boundaries, clients can have opportunities to practice them in the moment.

And perhaps one of my favorite things about working with horses is this: 7. they meet you where you are.

They don’t care about your diagnosis, your past, your mistakes, your job title, or whether you know exactly what to say.

They simply respond to the person standing in front of them.

At Creative Counseling & Learning Solutions, our horses aren’t just part of the scenery. 🐴 They can be meaningful partners in helping clients discover things about themselves that may be harder to uncover within four walls.

Sometimes the greatest lessons aren’t spoken at all.

🐾 Therapy Cat in Training: Nugget Update 🐾

Being a therapy cat doesn’t mean you have to stop being yourself… and Nugget is making sure we all understand that lesson. 😂

Our little therapy cat in training is still very much a work in progress. Sometimes she has a little more play in her than our clients were hoping for, and she rarely passes up an opportunity to antagonize her “big sister,” Alice. Apparently, annoying your older sibling is an important part of kitten development. 😹

But Nugget is learning. ❤️

She’s learning when it’s time to play and when someone needs quiet. She’s learning that sometimes her job is simply to curl up nearby, offer a snuggle, entertain someone who needs a smile, or make herself comfortable in the ridiculously oversized chair that she has clearly decided belongs to her. 😂

And maybe there’s a little lesson in Nugget’s journey for the rest of us, too:

Growth doesn’t require us to stop being who we are.
It means learning how to use who we are in ways that connect with and care for the people around us.

Nugget is still playful. Still mischievous. Still curious. Still completely Nugget.

She’s just learning how to be Nugget and a therapy cat. 🐾💗

And judging by these pictures… she may also be learning that being a therapy cat comes with some pretty great employee benefits. 😂

🐾 Apparently, Nugget has been promoted from “therapy cat in training” to “office cat burglar.” 😹

Things have been a little chaotic behind the scenes at Creative Counseling & Learning Solutions lately—but it’s the good kind of chaos! We’ve been working through some important changes designed to help things run more smoothly and allow us to continue providing the best care possible. And since Nugget clearly cannot be trusted with administrative responsibilities, I suppose I should share the updates myself. 😂

✨ UPDATE #1: We’ve upgraded our Electronic Health Records system!
We are now using TherapyNotes. Current clients, please be on the lookout for an email from TherapyNotes asking you to complete required forms. We know paperwork isn’t anyone’s favorite thing, but completing these forms is important so we can keep your records current and remain in compliance with insurance requirements.

✨ UPDATE #2: We have a new Billing Department!
We’re excited to share that we also are working with a new Billing Provider! This is another step toward making the behind-the-scenes side of your care more organized and efficient.

There may be a few growing pains while we get everything transitioned, and we truly appreciate your patience and grace as we work through them. 💚

Same mission. Same heart. A few exciting changes—and apparently one tiny cat burglar determined to keep things interesting. 🐾😂

Today, as the world celebrates love, we want to take a moment to discuss what truly makes love flourish: healthy love. ❤️

Love, in all its forms—romantic, platonic, familial, and self-love—is a cornerstone of a joyful and fulfilling life. But the quality of that love is what truly matters.

Healthy love isn't about perfection; it's about practice. It's built on a foundation of:
