Whitman County Fire Resources Deploy to Assist Spokane Area Fire Response

Multiple fire apparatus and personnel from fire agencies across Whitman County are deploying north to the Spokane area to assist with ongoing wildfire suppression efforts. These resources are joining a coordinated regional response to help protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure as fire activity continues.

While our crews are committed to supporting our neighboring communities, local agencies have taken steps to ensure emergency response capabilities remain in place throughout Whitman County.

Red Flag Warnings are expected to remain in effect through the night, signaling continued critical fire weather conditions. Hot temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds can rapidly increase the potential for wildfire growth.

We urge all residents and businesses to include Harvest Operations, to assess conditions each day before conducting any activity that could spark a fire. Please make smart, informed decisions, avoid unnecessary fire risks, and follow all local burn restrictions and fire safety guidance. A single spark can have devastating consequences under the current conditions.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING – SATURDAY 🚩

A Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Palouse due to extreme fire weather conditions.

💨 Southwest winds of 20–30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph and low humidity mean any spark could become a fast-moving wildfire.

Please help prevent fire starts:
• No outdoor burning
• Avoid parking on dry grass
• Use caution with equipment that can create sparks
• Secure trailer chains
• Report smoke or fire immediately by calling 911

🚒 Field Fire Response | Joe Babbitt Rd.

This afternoon, Whitman County Fire District 11 responded alongside our partners at Whitman County Fire District 12 to a field fire near Joe Babbitt Road.

The fire was started by a combine during harvest operations. Thanks to the quick actions of the operator, our volunteer firefighters, and our District 12 colleagues, crews were able to contain the fire before it spread further into surrounding fields.

As harvest season continues and temperatures remain high, even a small spark can quickly ignite dry crops and grasses. We encourage everyone operating equipment to have fire extinguishers readily available, inspect machinery regularly, and remain alert to changing field conditions.

Thank you to our firefighters, neighboring agencies, and the farming community for working together to protect lives, property, and our agricultural landscape.

Thursday July 16th into Friday July 17th, an all County dispatch request sent Whitman County Fire District 11’s Albion Station west on Highway 26 to assist Whitman County Fire District 8 on the state-mobilized Lyons Ferry Fire near Hooper and the surrounding communities.

This fire was significant in size, fast-moving, and highly unpredictable. Our crews responded quickly with Attack Engine 1145 and Attack Tender 1142, working tirelessly through the night to protect homes, defend property, and battle challenging terrain.

We are incredibly grateful that all of our firefighters returned home safely, and we stand ready to continue assisting wherever we are needed.

A heartfelt thank you to Whitman County Fire District 8, our mutual aid partners, the Washington State Mobilization crews, and every firefighter and emergency responder working around the clock to protect our communities. Your dedication, teamwork, and sacrifice do not go unnoticed.

On Saturday, June 27, while working on a wildfire in western Colorado, five federal firefighters were involved in a burnover incident resulting in shelter deployment. Two firefighters are being treated for burn injuries, and three others did not survive.

This tragic loss of wildland firefighters in Colorado is a heartbreaking reminder of the extraordinary risks these men and women take to protect lives, homes, and natural landscapes. Facing unpredictable weather, rough terrain, and rapidly changing fire conditions, they put themselves in harm’s way to defend their communities. When firefighters lose their lives in the line of duty, the impact is felt far beyond the fireline, leaving families, fellow firefighters, and entire communities grieving. Their courage, dedication, and selfless service deserve lasting honor and gratitude.

Today, a wildland fire originated at the base of Almota grade/SR-194, leading District 11 to mobilize apparatus from each station, including Albion station 4. Thank you to all of our volunteers and thank you to our mutual aid partners! This was a team effort that District 11 was proud to be a part of.
