🌱 INTERSECTIONALITY: WHERE SOCIAL WORK MEETS FAITH ✝️🤝

“A sower went out to sow.” — Matthew 13:3

This week, we are talking about The Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13 and what it can teach us about both Social Work and our Christian faith.

One of the most powerful lessons is simple:

The Sower is not responsible for the growth—or the lack of growth. The Sower is responsible for continuing to sow. 🌱

As social workers, counselors, peer support workers, and Christians, we cannot force someone to change. We cannot make someone choose recovery. We cannot control whether the seed we plant takes root today, tomorrow, years from now—or at all.

But we can keep planting.

We can plant seeds of hope.
Seeds of recovery.
Seeds of compassion.
Seeds of dignity.
Seeds of faith.
Seeds that remind people that their story isn’t finished.

Our responsibility is to share The Word, serve people where they are, and continue believing that recovery is possible.

That is what NM Christian Counseling Outreach is doing this week as we go into the community—serving at , , The Rock at Noon Day, Safe Outdoor Space, Mesilla Recovery, and a host of other locations.

We don’t always know what kind of soil we are planting in. We may never personally see the harvest.

But that doesn’t stop the Sower from sowing.

So we GO FORTH. We meet people where they are. We love. We serve. We encourage. We share hope.

And then we plant more seed. 🌱

Our job is not to control the harvest. Our job is to remain faithful enough to keep planting.

Intersectionality of Faith and Social Work in Relapse

Relapse does not mean recovery is impossible. It means the person still needs support.

Substance use disorder recovery is difficult, and not everyone succeeds the first time they try. Some people stumble more than once before they find lasting freedom. Our responsibility as social workers and Christians is not to shame them, abandon them, or define them by their worst moment—it is to help them rise again.

Galatians 6:1–2 reminds us to restore those who have fallen with gentleness and to carry one another’s burdens.

This is where faith and social work intersect:

Compassion without condemnation
Accountability without rejection
Hope without giving up

The person who relapsed is still a person worthy of dignity, grace, kindness, and another opportunity. A setback is not the end of the story.

Show grace.
Show kindness.
Maintain healthy boundaries.
Continue encouraging change.
Never underestimate what God can do through one person who refuses to give up on another.

Our Clinical Director, Lee Roy Lucero, has spent years exploring something deeply meaningful: the intersection of faith and social work—and how faith, service, compassion, and our shared humanity can come together to make a real difference in the lives of others. ❤️

Today, Lee Roy is stepping forward to share his story.

Not just to tell people where he has been, but to reach others, create meaningful conversations, and remind us of something we can sometimes forget:

🌎 There is more that makes us alike than divides us.

We all experience struggles.
We all carry stories.
