Congratulations to Avinash Sahu, PhD, on receiving a grant for $2.1 million over five years from the National Institutes of Health.
Sahu’s research will focus on using artificial intelligence tools to automate the process of generating hypotheses and directly testing them. He hopes to accelerate biomedical discovery by more efficiently exploring the variants and interactions of the 227 million known proteins and 111 million chemical compounds.

Congratulations to Shuguang Leng, MBBS, PhD, on his appointment to the the Victor and Ruby Hansen Surface Professorship in Cancer Population Sciences and Cancer Health Disparities, succeeding Shiraz Mishra, MBBS, PhD.
Leng is an associate professor in the School of Medicine and co-leader of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.
His NIH-funded research examines how environmental exposures, including wildfire smoke and other pollutants, contribute to lung aging and cancer, as well as factors behind the disproportionately high incidence and mortality of liver cancer among underserved populations in New Mexico.
