The State Bar of New Mexico was proud to attend the Opportunity Judicial Clerkship Program kickoff luncheon, bringing together law students, judges, mentors and community partners in support of the next generation of legal professionals.

The program connects law students from the University of New Mexico School of Law and law schools across the country with judges for meaningful summer clerkship opportunities throughout New Mexico. Attendees included representatives from the New Mexico Supreme Court, the New Mexico Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico and community partners committed to fostering professional growth and expanding opportunities within the legal profession.

Pictured are State Bar of New Mexico President Allison H. Block-Chavez and Equity in Justice Program Director Amanda Parker.

We wish all participating students a successful and rewarding summer as they gain valuable experience serving alongside members of the judiciary.

New Podcast Episode! Trauma - Informed Care for the Legal Profession - Part 1 🎧 Listen for FREE at www.sbnm.org/LWBApodcast. In Part 1 of this episode, our speakers explore the critical role of trauma-informed care within the legal profession. Featuring Scott Patterson-Alatorre, Judge Mateo Page and Tenessa Eakins, the conversation examines how routine exposure to traumatic material can impact legal professionals’ decision-making, emotional well-being and overall performance.

The speakers highlight a pervasive gap in recognition and support, noting that many in the legal field navigate the psychological weight of their work sometimes without adequate resources or acknowledgment. They discuss how cumulative exposure to trauma can contribute to decision fatigue, diminished empathy, and burnout - ultimately affecting both practitioners and the clients they serve.

The episode also offers practical, actionable strategies, encouraging professionals to develop greater self-awareness of their emotional responses, implement containment techniques and establish clear boundaries between their professional and personal lives.

STAY TUNED FOR PART 2 - AIRING ON JUNE 9!

When Burnout Speaks. Listen now for FREE at www.sbnm.org/LWBApodcast! Welcome to Season 6 of Legal Well-Being in Action! For the start of our new season, we explore how burnout shows up for hard-working attorneys - often disguised as “normal stress” or simply part of the job. We discuss why burnout can persist even when commitment, competence and ethics remain intact. You’ll also learn why creative expression is an evidence-backed tool for nervous system regulation, especially for analytical, high-control professions. Finally, we share realistic, time-respectful ways busy attorneys can begin small creative practices that actually help. Thank you to this episode’s speakers, Pamela Moore and Virginia Hicks.
