This is a complex foot deformity. It develops as a result of loss of sensation and an undetected broken bone that leads to destruction of the soft tissue of the foot.

Charcot disease is not well understood, but what we think happens is that a patient's nerves can’t control the blood flow to the feet very well, and increased blood flow “washes out” the bones and they begin to collapse.

Whether caused by a prior injury, wear and tear (osteoarthritis), or an autoimmune disease that affects the joints (rheumatoid arthritis), advanced arthritis can cause severe pain, inflammation, and stiffness, as well as make walking difficult. We can remove the damaged ankle joint and replace it with an artificial implant, relieving pain and restoring ankle function.
