At long last, Gail has reached the turning point in her Route 66 ash scattering road trip at The Blue Whale in Catoosa, Oklahoma! Starting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Gail Rubin, an author, a death educator, and a certified thanatologist, has been scattering her brother-in-law Steven Bleicher's cremated remains at significant spots and points of interest along Route 66. Steven was an artist and art professor who created a series of work about Route 66. In his will, he expressed wanting his ashes scattered along the historic route and Gail took on the task of fulfilling his final wish.

Throughout this series, Gail has been scattering Steven's ashes with a Silver Lining Token Scattering Kit. Passages' Scattering Kits come in two sizes with six possible designs to mix and match with. Each scattering tube is accompanied by a unique .life geotag to mark the exact location where a loved one is laid to rest. Passages International's Gourd Urns are one of a kind and handmade in house by talented members of our production crew. The gourds themselves are grown and harvested here in the American southwest with driftwood handles foraged by our team near the Rio Grande River in Albuquerque. Natural variations of the materials plus the somewhat random paths of electricity pulsed through them mean no two Gourd Urns ever turn out exactly the same. October marks the beginning of Dia de Mu***os and as a US border state whose population is nearly 50% Hispanic, New Mexicans are no strangers to this incredibly special holiday. Dia de Mu***os, or Day of the Dead, is a multi-day holiday that celebrates the lives of those who have passed away. This indigenous Mesoamerican rooted holiday revolves around the belief that during this time of year the veil between the world of the living and the afterlife dissolves and the deceased's souls come back to visit living loved ones for a brief reunion. These communities viewed death as an integral, ever-present part of life that should be acknowledged and respected rather than a taboo topic to be avoided.

Does it shock you to learn that this is an urn? These Gourd Urns are biodegradable and made with materials sourced right here in the American Southwest. Prior to shocking, the gourds are sprayed with a saline solution that acts as a conductor to pass electricity through the urn's surface, leaving behind beautiful lighting-like streaks. They are made fully in-house and feature driftwood handles handpicked by members of our team near the Rio Grande River in Albuquerque. They come in three sizes and are suitable for the cremated remains of both humans and pets.

Happy Balloon Fiesta opening weekend! Tomorrow (weather permitting) hundreds of colorful and larger than life hot air balloons will take flight for the first day of the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. It's a cherished New Mexican festival and tradition that adds a little whimsy to our early October mornings every year. As an Albuquerque based company, Passages designed a Cremation Scattering Tube just for those who hold this special event dear to their hearts. So that when they're laid to rest, they can go wrapped in a little piece of home.

Back in 2024, Passages International had the opportunity to participate in the New Mexico Before I Die Festival coordinated by Gail Rubin. We conducted facility tours, presentations, and demos, including a hands on shrouding demonstration with Natural Burial New Mexico. In this demonstration attendees had the chance to either practice shrouding or be shrouded. Afterward, the shrouded volunteers relayed their experiences, expressing that they had felt a sense of comfort and care in being wrapped for their pretend burials.

Shrouding is by nature a very intimate form of burial preparation, not dissimilar to how one might swaddle an infant. There is a sense of gentleness and care that goes into the process. Not only in the wrapping, but also in how the decedent's body gracefully returns to the earth. No concrete, metal, or hardwood barriers; no formaldehyde harming the surrounding soil; just a biodegradable cloth and flesh that gradually decomposes to enrich the land. A final act of kindness from the departed individual to the planet.
