Providing the most comprehensive collection of sustainably produced & biodegradable urns, caskets, and memorial products. was founded in 1999, as the now rapidly growing trend for greener funerals was at its earliest stage. While many companies now offer some green funeral merchandise, Passages is dedicated to providing sustainable choices. We design and produce many of our own products, and stand

behind them. Our quality and service are unsurpassed. The breadth of our offerings is unavailable anywhere else. We began the company by providing affordable and environmentally friendly options for families who chose to have a more eco-conscious ritual for their loved ones. Our urns offered an alternative to the cardboard and plastic box containing a loved one’s cremated remains that was typically given to grieving families who did not select an urn. Passages creates and distributes the best quality products, produced without cutting down trees. In addition, most of our products are crafted by hand from sustainable or recycled resources, using antique molds and centuries old techniques. We use recycled cardboard boxes with biodegradable peanuts for packing and shipping, and are proud to support several conservation organizations dedicated to preserving our pristine planet for future generations. Passages is a family owned and operated business, and we have over 75 years of combined service to the funeral industry. Our family has been serving the funeral needs of communities in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado for almost 50 years. We are proud to be approved by Green America as a socially and environmentally responsible business. We are also a member of the Green Burial Council, an organization working to make burial more meaningful, simple, and sustainable, and have been a member since their inception. We offer by far the greatest variety of product that has been approved by the Green Burial Council

A growing number of people are looking for greener funeral options. Passages offers the most complete selection of sustainably produced and biodegradable urns, caskets, and memorial products. We are dedicated to offering personalized options to families who desire environmentally friendly choices for their end-of-life rituals.

Our Himalayan rock salt urns are made by nature and crafted by hand. Each urn starts off as a solid block of salt that is carefully shaped and finished into its final form. Because they come directly from the earth, each urn reveals layers, mineral markings, and variations in color that are entirely distinct. The differences in appearance are not imperfections to be hidden, but part of what helps make every memorial unique.

After having already visited the two end points in Chicago and Los Angeles, Gail made her way out to the midpoint of Route 66 to scatter some of her brother-in-law Steven Bleicher's cremated remains. Steven was an artist and art professor who created a series of work all about Route 66. It was his dying wish that his ashes would be scattered along this mother road and his sister-in-law Gail Rubin happily obliged to the request.

Gail Rubin is an author, a death educator, and a certified thanatologist. In this series, Gail is scattering Steven's ashes with a Scattering Kit. Passages' Scattering Kits come in two sizes with six possible designs to mix and match with. Gail is using Silver Lining Token Scattering Tubes for her and Steven's journey. Each scattering tube is accompanied by a distinct .life geotag to mark the exact location where a loved one is laid to rest. Etern.Life is a digital memorial platform with a global community map and memorial pages where individuals and families can upload photos and words about their departed loved one.

Okay, you caught us! Not ALL of our urns are biodegradable. Some of them are made of salt and dissolve in water. 😉 Our Himalayan rock salt urns are perfect for deep sea or ocean burial. They sink quickly and dissolve in a matter of hours. Though exact dissolving times will vary with water temperature and depth, our large Athena and Amara urns comfortably accommodate one full set of cremated remains and take only approximately 4 hours to completely disintegrate. They are the two styles of urns that break down the fastest out of any products we carry.

What if after you die you could return to the earth in something made from it? Our Himalayan Rock Salt Urns are made from naturally occurring pink Himalayan salt formed over 250 million years ago. No two are the same, striped in a spectrum of pink, orange, and cream hues. Each one is as unique as the blocks of salt they're carved from. They're an elegant tribute to the beauty of nature in all its variance and complexity.

These urns are dissolve in water and are designed specifically for deep sea or ocean burial. We do not recommend interring them as salt is damaging to soil and plant life. Once placed in the water, the urn sinks quickly and dissolves in approximately four hours, gracefully releasing the cremated remains in that time.

It's time for the Cremation Association of North America's 108th Cremation Innovation Convention! This year in Minneapolis-St. Paul and in part proudly sponsored by Passages International! In addition to that, we will also be providing the convention's coffee sleeves in collaboration with our sister company, Symphony Handmade Paper.

At Passages, we try to ask ourselves, how can we make the many parts of our lives and deaths as sustainable as possible? There are opportunities for sustainability everywhere, even in the finest of details. That's why when possible, we work in conjunction with Symphony for our print marketing needs. Or in this case, the Cremation Innovation Convention's coffee drinking attendees' needs. These coffee sleeves are made from recycled paper, embedded with wildflower seeds, and printed on with water soluble non toxic inks. So when you've finished your cup of coffee, you can keep the sleeve to give something back to the earth when you're done.

So, what is the big deal with green funerals anyway? Why do they matter? Green funerals are about connection. To the earth. To each other. To the cycle of life and death. They remind us that we are all a part of something much bigger than ourselves. They're an opportunity to put that concept into practice. Whether an person or family opts for natural burial with a shroud or woven casket, or pairs cremation with a scattering tube or biodegradable urn, its all for the greater purpose of fostering care and connection.

What are your feelings about green funerals? Let us know in the comments! We'd love to hear your thoughts.
