Why I left traditional pediatrics. Part 5. It’s a long one…

I spent years trying to find the right place to practice. I kept thinking maybe the next clinic would be different. Maybe the next opportunity would give me the balance, support, and ability to practice the way I knew I could.

But after trying a few different places, I started seeing the same problems in different forms.

From poor communication and lack of support, to billing practices that left families afraid to ask questions, to situations where medical decisions and orders weren’t being followed through the way they should be.

And then there was the moment I asked for a schedule change. I was willing to take a pay cut just to have more time with my family and work a day schedule. The answer was no.

That was a turning point.

I realized I could keep looking for a place that aligned with what I believed healthcare should be, or I could stop waiting for someone else to create it.

So I did.

More time. More continuity. More communication. More room to actually know the families I care for.

I didn’t just want a different job. I wanted to build a different kind of practice.

And that’s how Trailblazer began. ❤️

Why I left traditional pediatrics. Part 4.

This was one of the biggest internal struggles for me.

I became really good at documenting, coding, and understanding the insurance side of medicine. But the more I learned, the more uncomfortable I became with how much insurance reimbursement could influence the way care was delivered.

I wanted to document thoroughly, support the level of care I was providing, and make recommendations based on what a child actually needed. But I also knew that the way a visit was coded could affect what a family ended up paying out of pocket.

And that never sat quite right with me.

I didn’t want to make medical decisions based on what an insurance company would reimburse. I wanted to make decisions based on the child sitting in front of me.

Insurance has a place in healthcare, but it shouldn’t get in the way of the relationship between a provider and a family.

That was another piece of why I started questioning whether traditional pediatrics was where I belonged.

I didn’t leave pediatrics. I wanted to practice it differently. ❤️

Why I left traditional pediatrics. Part 3.

This part is a little harder to talk about.

Over the years, I took on more responsibility, more complex patients, additional work, and continued investing in my education and experience. I genuinely loved what I did, but I increasingly felt like the work I was putting in wasn’t being recognized or valued.

I wasn’t expecting everyone to be paid the same. I understand that different roles come with different responsibilities. But I did believe that experience, workload, contributions, and the level of care we provide should matter.

I was proud of the work I did, including helping bring postpartum depression screening into pediatric visits and contributing to research that was eventually published.

But at some point, I had to ask myself: How much more could I give to a system that didn’t seem willing to give much back?

I didn’t leave because I stopped caring about pediatrics. I left because I wanted to keep caring without feeling like I was constantly running on empty.

And this was only one piece of the bigger picture.

Why I left traditional pediatrics. Part 2.

One of my biggest frustrations wasn’t just how many patients I was seeing (because I got good at it). It was how difficult it became to actually KNOW my patients.

I had hundreds of families on my panel, but because of scheduling restrictions and limited availability, they couldn’t always see me when they needed me.

Instead, they were seeing different providers, repeating their child’s medical history, explaining the same concerns over and over, and sometimes important details were getting lost along the way.

Continuity of care matters. Especially when you’re managing chronic conditions, recurrent illnesses, developmental delays, ADHD, autism, and mental health concerns.

I didn’t just want to see patients. I wanted to build relationships with families, understand the bigger picture, and be someone they could count on.

That’s one of the biggest things I wanted to change when I created Trailblazer Pediatrics.

Your child shouldn’t have to start over every time they need care. ❤️

Why I left traditional pediatrics. Part 1.

When I started my career as a pediatric nurse practitioner, I honestly thought seeing 28 patients a day (more on nights and weekends) was just how healthcare worked.

I didn’t know any different. I was learning, growing, building confidence, and trying to keep up with a schedule that never seemed to slow down.

Late nights charting, working until 8 or 9 PM, sometimes finishing notes at 2 or 3 in the morning. And even as I became a more experienced provider, I started realizing that seeing more patients didn’t necessarily mean providing better care.

I loved pediatrics. I loved my patients. But I knew there had to be a better way.

This is the story of why I left, what I learned along the way, and ultimately why I decided to build something different.

Because I didn’t leave pediatrics. I just wanted to practice it differently.
