Lester, a retired Air Force veteran with a master’s degree in business, lives in a busy household with his children and their mother. He has a medical history that includes the removal of a kidney due to renal cell carcinoma and progressively worsening kidney failure. Lester is devoted to caring for his disabled son – a son who was able to get help after discovering Lester on the ground, unresponsive after a medical emergency.

Lester was first admitted to an acute care hospital with sepsis and acute hypoxemic hypercapnic respiratory failure, along with a Staphylococcus epidermidis infection. His condition required intubation, and he was later transferred to Kindred Hospital Albuquerque for ventilator management, tracheostomy care, IV antibiotics, and hemodialysis.

His recovery was challenging, complicated by episodes of hypotension and circulatory shock. Despite these obstacles, the respiratory therapy team helped him progress to successful decannulation, allowing him to breathe and eat independently again. During his stay, Lester also received physical, occupational, and speech therapy to support his strength, mobility, and overall recovery.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the entire care team, Lester was ultimately discharged with full improvement.

“When I was transferred to Kindred Hospital, I was in very bad shape, and with the care and persistence of the professional staff at Kindred Hospital, I recovered faster than was expected," Lester said. "I would like to thank them for caring so much about me!”

Thank you, Lester, for entrusting us with your care!

Jade, the mother of a 6-year-old son, came to Kindred Hospital Albuquerque following a medical emergency that threatened her life and left her fully dependent on her caregivers. But thanks to the care she received during 27 days at Kindred, Jade has regained her independence and hopes to soon return to the activities she and her son love, including playing basketball together.

Jade initially was taken to the ER of a local hospital with confusion and shortness of breath. She was found to be severely anemic and in hemorrhagic shock. Jade was admitted to the ICU, where she was placed on a ventilator and feeding tube. She received dialysis, blood transfusions, and antibiotics. She also had a serious wound at the base of her spine.

Jade was transferred to Kindred, where respiratory therapists weaned her from the ventilator and helped her regain her voice. Jade also participated in physical, occupational, and speech therapy. In addition, caregivers treated her wound, and Kindred’s dietitian ensured Jade got proper nutrition to promote the healing of her skin.

Formerly dependent on her caregivers for all activities, Jade progressed to near independence. She was especially emotional when she finally reunited with her son during her stay.

Jade was able to be discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation facility. Inspired by her care team, she’s considering going back to school for a career in healthcare—or pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming an FBI agent.

“I had my doubts at first only because I despise hospitals," Jade said, "but the thought was subdued by their kindness and willingness to help me get better.”

Before his accident, Miguel was in the middle of rebuilding his life. After overcoming many challenges, he had recently moved into a new apartment and was focused on strengthening his relationship with his 10 year old son, who means the world to him. The two spent time together going on walks and sharing meals, simple moments that mattered deeply to Miguel and motivated him every day.

Miguel came to Kindred Hospital Albuquerque following a motor vehicle accident that resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury, multiple fractures, and complex medical needs. Upon admission, he was on a heated tracheostomy collar and was unable to communicate, follow simple commands, speak, or eat. He was dependent for all mobility and daily activities and required wrist restraints due to agitation and impulsivity. Although he was able to open his eyes, he only intermittently tracked and required significant support from the care team.

Miguel’s primary focus of treatment included respiratory weaning, reconditioning, and nutritional support. Due to significant cognitive deficits, he participated in the restorative program for several weeks. Slowly but steadily, he began to show progress. He started following commands, became more alert, and was eventually able to actively participate in skilled therapies.

As the weeks went on, Miguel’s engagement and outlook transformed. Initially arriving sedated and highly impulsive, he progressed to sitting at the nurses’ station, interacting with staff, and answering simple questions. His determination and strong work ethic were evident as he worked tirelessly with the therapy team throughout his stay.

By the time of discharge, Miguel had made remarkable progress. He was successfully decannulated and breathing comfortably on room air. He was verbalizing and communicating more effectively, able to stand at the sink to complete grooming and hygiene with assistance, and ambulate up to 70 feet with a walker and minimal assistance.

On January 9, 2026, Miguel was discharged to Lovelace Rehabilitation to continue his recovery journey. His goals remain clear and deeply personal: to continue gaining strength, improve his memory, and most importantly, be the best father he can be for his son.

Karen is a vibrant fifth-grade teacher who brings energy and enthusiasm to her classroom, inspiring her students in math, science, and Spanish. Known for her love of learning and playful spirit, she can often be found playing ball with her students. Outside of school, Karen is a devoted wife, a loving mother to her daughter, and an active member of her community.

Karen was admitted to the hospital after experiencing severe abdominal pain. Doctors discovered a large obstruction caused by a sigmoid tumor, and she underwent surgery. Following the procedure, she was transferred to the intensive care unit at the acute hospital, where she required ventilator support and faced several medical complications.

When Karen arrived at Kindred Hospital Albuquerque, she needed respiratory rehabilitation, wound care, and physical therapy to help her regain strength and independence. With determination, a positive outlook, and the support of her interdisciplinary care team, Karen began making steady and meaningful progress.

Her perseverance never wavered. Each day, she worked hard toward new milestones, celebrating every small victory along the way. Today, Karen continues her recovery and looks forward to returning to the classroom, ready to inspire her students once again with her resilience and love for life.

Reflecting on her journey, Karen shared, “When I first woke up, I heard the doctors say they hadn’t expected me to make it. But somehow, I’m still here — stronger than ever. I’m going to keep getting better and keep moving forward.”
