Today we celebrate the quiet strength, fierce advocacy, and deeply rooted wisdom of midwives 🤍

Happy International Midwives Day to the those of you right here in our community, particularly Our Birth Center Midwife and Our Homebirth Midwife, you show up day after day to do this sacred work. All while raising your own families.

You are gently but boldly shifting the culture of birth.
You are creating spaces where women are truly seen, heard, and respected.
Where informed consent isn’t rushed, but honored.
Where care is personal, unrushed, and deeply intentional.
Where birth is treated not as a medical event to manage, but as a powerful, physiological process to support.

You hold space in a way that invites trust back into the body.
You remind women of their strength when the world tells them to doubt it.
You stand as both protector and witness in some of life’s most vulnerable, transformative moments.

Because of you, families are experiencing birth differently: more connected, more empowered, more whole.

We see you. We are grateful for you. And this work matters more than words can hold.

Why do we say 3-1-1 as when to go to the hospital, for time labors? In most cases this allows you to get to the hospital in a window that allows you not to be rushed but doesn't increase your chances of unwanted interventions.

If you are looking for a low to no intervention birth, in a hospital setting, when you show up matters. Show up too soon and you'll greatly increase the likelihood that you'll be pressured into pitocin, having your waters broken, or hearing "there is no trophy for unmedicated birth, do you want an epidural?"

Show up too late, no one really wants to have a car birth.

3-1-1 tends to be that sweet spot your first labor.

It is important to stay in touch with your doula and Medical provider throughout this early part because not all labors are the same.

I've worked with some women who have had unintentional unassisted births because their 3-1 never made it the hour. I've worked with other who have stayed at 3-1 for hours. It's all relative.

Two safe rules of thumb
1. Listen to your intuition, most women. reach a point of wanting to be in their birth space around active/transition labor, listen to that.
2. If you keep seeing small bloody mucus every time you wipe, generally a sign of active labor for 80% of women, good sign yo get ready to go.

What is your 2025 Moment you want to recap over and over again?

With mixed emotions on year end recaps, I post my recap.

On one hand as a business owner and doula I love seeing all the numbers, where I've been, what I witnessed, what we got to see together. To see the successes of each family.

On the other hand, it can feel like a devalue of each individual family and their journey. It can feel like a deduction of life and birth work to a number. To doulas struggling to grow their business it can feel like "look what I did" brag (I definitely felt that a few times when my business struggled to grow).

But what I have come to, is each number represents a couple, a baby, a little life. It represents struggles, joys, triumphs, and trials. Each number is a beautiful life fought for. Each number is a Mom who gave her body, heart, and soul for her baby. Each number is just a snap shot of a much deeper story to be told.

Thank you to each family that honored me with the journey of being your doula, of being a part of your birth team!

Merry Christmas 🤍

Today I’m holding so much gratitude for the families who invited me into their most sacred moments this year. Thank you for trusting me as your doula, for welcoming my hands, my heart, and my presence during such a tender season of life.

Birth, postpartum, and parenthood are protected and sacred spaces. It’s been an honor to walk alongside you as you welcomed new life, found your strength, and grew your families.

Wishing you a Christmas filled with peace, warmth, rest, and the deep joy that comes from being surrounded by love. 🤍✨

With so much gratitude,
Colleen

I still remember the first birth I ever attended. The incredible trusted me to be there with her and her husband for the birth of their 4th baby, during covid lock downs.

There are two things I remember most about her birth. First how in control, inward, and present she was - all while she went into the out of body hypnotic space of labor land. Second, that even though it was definitely not there first go around with labor - they both left our time together feeling supported and empowered during labor in a way they hadn't in their previous births.

This Thanksgiving I am spending time remembering all the couples that have trusted my Mom and I to be on their birth team! The miracle of birth I've been able to witness time and time again.

BUT more importantly the transformation into motherhood, into parenthood, I've been able to cheerlead, champion, gently coach, walk alongside of, and witness!

So thank you! To all the women who have trusted me to be their doula. To the husbands that welcomes the extra hands and guidance and families who have become an extension of my own.

I'm not even 1/3 the way through this book and it has me realizing how bad my own phone addiction is and taking steps to correct it. I ache for the next generations coming up if things don't change. If we phone addicted Mellenials and Gen Z don't change. Because as much as I want to protect M from having her brain re-wired, I need to re-wire mine for the better first.

As Jonathan shares stats and data on how the Great Rewiring of 2015 happened, I keep thinking - how much worse when these pre-teens and teens he is talking about parents are also on their phones all the time. That the one place these young minds should be getting validated outside the internet they aren't because of our own addictions and struggles. That we, myself included, are perpetuating it by posting pictures of their faces and body's on social media from the day they are born.

I don't know the balance. Is there one? I want to share pieces of our life on social media for those we don't always get to see - but is it worth it. If M decides to do an AI search if herself and our family in 12 years, will she be harmed, mad, annoyed, or hurt by what she finds I've posted?

These are the thoughts this book has me thinking over. I know I'm not alone in this struggle/journey - so I've decided to think out loud. No conclusive decisions or answers, just take a hard look thoughts.
