Happy National Speech-Language-Hearing Month 🤍

My name is Shirley, and I’m a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist, school-based SLP, literacy lover, and mom. One thing that matters to me is helping speech therapy feel less overwhelming for both children and their families.

Long before the degree, I was already drawn to books, stories, communication, and the way connection shapes learning. That love for language still guides the way I support children and parents today.

If you’re new here, welcome. I’m glad you’re here!

And if you’re an SLP, CF, or SLPA looking for a supportive, therapist-led team in the Houston area, Surely Speech & Language Services is currently hiring for school-based positions for the 2025–2026 school year.

If something feels off with your child’s speech, knowing what to do next can be overwhelming. There’s a wide range of what is considered typical so while sometimes wait and see is the move, early intervention makes a huge difference.

Comment NEXT and I’ll send you my Free Guide with tips on how to bring this up to your pediatrician 🫶🏾

Welcome back to my series called “30 Second Speech Tips” where I share simple, evidence-based ways to support your toddler’s language at home.

Today’s tip: Pause and Wait.

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I’ve observed so many loving parents and grandparents jump in too quickly. They answer for the child, repeat the question, or fill the silence before the toddler has a chance to respond.

When you give your toddler a few extra seconds, you’re giving them time to:
• process language
• think of a response
• try a word, sound, or new gesture

Next time you’re with your kiddo, Say a word or ask a simple question… then pause and wait 5–10 seconds. It’s called Expectant Waiting ☺️

It might feel long to you, but sometimes it’s exactly the the space they need to communicate.

Save this for later and follow for more quick, real-life speech tips 🤍 Let me know in the comments if you’ll try this!
