Menopause and your heart:

One of the biggest myths about menopause is that hormone therapy works the same no matter when you start it. It doesn’t.

Researchers call it the Timing Hypothesis.

What we’ve learned is that for many healthy women, starting hormone therapy before age 60 or within about 10 years of menopause appears to provide the greatest benefits while carrying lower cardiovascular risk.

Why?

Early in menopause, blood vessels tend to be healthier and more responsive to estrogen. Years later, however, some women may already have developed silent plaque in their arteries. At that point, hormone therapy may not provide the same cardiovascular benefits and, in some women, may even increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

That’s why timing matters.

At Louisiana Cardiovascular & Thoracic Institute, we don’t just ask if you’re having hot flashes. We also evaluate your cardiovascular health. Depending on your risk factors, we assess for hidden vascular disease before making recommendations, because menopause care and heart health should go hand in hand.

The earlier you understand your risk, the more options you may have.

If you’re entering menopause or have questions about hormone therapy, don’t wait until symptoms become severe. Have the conversation early.

Timing matters because cardiovascular health changes over time. That’s why we evaluate both menopausal symptoms and heart health in our on-site vascular lab to help personalize treatment decisions.

Every woman is different, and hormone therapy is not appropriate for everyone. The best plan starts with an individualized assessment.

Our goal isn’t to put every woman on hormone therapy. Our goal is to help every woman understand her cardiovascular risk so she can make the best decision for her health.

Every year on the Sunday closest to June 8th, Pastor Steve Speer stands before his congregation at HIS CHURCH in Pineville and reminds them of the day that changed his life forever.

Twenty-two years ago, Dr. Gary Jones performed the double bypass surgery that saved Speer’s life after a 99% blockage in the “widowmaker” artery nearly took it.

This year, at 66 years old, Pastor Speer honored the anniversary by climbing 66 flights of stairs.

His story is about far more than survival. It’s a story about faith, second chances, compassion, and learning not to take a single day for granted after coming face-to-face with mortality.

This Men’s Health Month, let his story be a reminder: don’t ignore the warning signs. Pay attention to your health. The people who love you are counting on you to.
