Sickle cell disease affects 1 in 365 Black or African American births, and many patients depend on regular blood transfusions to live healthy, active lives. The most compatible blood matches often come from donors of the same ethnic background, making African American blood donors especially important. In fact, 1 in 3 African American donors can provide a vital match for a sickle cell patient.
