After an early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis transformed her mother's life, Respiratory Therapist and Sleep Technologist Gaye Knott found her life had also changed. What started as a journaling outlet to process the day-to-day eventually became something much bigger. When her mother passed, she felt encouraged by God and by her role as a caregiver to use her mother's story to help others.
Her entries became Recipes from Mom, a memoir built on memories, faith, and the reality of caregiving. Recipes from Mom honors her mother’s legacy and gives voice to families navigating Alzheimer’s. Through every page, Gaye reflects the CHRISTUS value of compassion, sharing her journey with honesty, empathy, and a desire to support others facing similar challenges.
This Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, Gaye hopes readers can find peace in knowing the battle can be difficult, while also embracing the small moments of joy, connection and dignity that make every day with loved ones meaningful.

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Paul Miki, the Patron Saint of Japan and one of the first native Japanese Christians whose faith endured even in the face of persecution.

As a Jesuit seminarian and gifted preacher, Paul Miki boldly shared the Gospel at a time when Christianity was outlawed in Japan. In 1597, he and 25 companions were arrested and crucified for their faith. From the cross, Paul continued to preach, stating just before his death “After Christ’s example, I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain.” His courage and unwavering trust in God helped sustain the Catholic faith in Japan for generations. St. Paul Miki reminds us that even in the most difficult moments, faith, mercy and hope can leave a lasting impact.

Congratulations to Nicholas Vidrine, our Lily Award recipient. The Lily Award honors a nursing student who demonstrates grace, resilience and devotion while answering the call to heal, comfort and serve.

Nicholas is a student from Louisiana State University – Alexandria and is recognized for his growth, dedication and strong clinical instincts throughout his nursing education. His nomination highlights his ability to assess patients thoughtfully, anticipate needs without prompting and bring initiative and compassion into each interaction.

Beyond his clinical abilities, Nicholas is also known as a supportive classmate who looks out for others without seeking recognition. His humility, professionalism and willingness to learn reflect the strength of our partnership with LSUA in preparing nurses to serve our community.

We are proud to celebrate Nicholas and the students who continue answering the call to care for our communities with compassion, integrity and excellence.

This Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. As we gather with friends and family, we also take a moment to acknowledge those who never made it home with a prayer service and a Missing Man Table—an enduring symbol of remembrance.

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Magdalene of Nagasaki. Born near Nagasaki, Japan, Magdalene endured the loss of her family to martyrdom, yet her faith only deepened. Magdalene taught catechism, sought alms for the poor, visited the sick and encouraged fellow Christians during intense persecution. After several spiritual leaders were martyred, she continued their mission and eventually surrendered herself to authorities in 1634 to strengthen the courage of others. She endured torture for 13 days before her martyrdom. Canonized in 1987, Saint Magdalene remains a powerful witness of courage, solidarity and unwavering love for Christ.

Congratulations to Kenzie Basco, our Lily Award recipient, which honors a nursing student who demonstrates grace, resilience and devotion while answering the call to heal, comfort and serve.

Kenzie is recognized for the extraordinary perseverance and compassion she showed throughout nursing school, even while facing profound personal challenges. During her academic journey, she welcomed two children who required extended care in our NICU, all while continuing her coursework, clinical responsibilities and professional development.

Through those experiences, Kenzie deepened her empathy and strengthened her commitment to patient-centered care. Her journey as a student at Northwestern State University - CENLA Campus reflects the strength of our partnership in preparing compassionate, highly skilled nurses to serve our communities.

We are proud to celebrate Kenzie and her classmates as they carry these qualities into every patient interaction and continue their journey as exceptional future nurses.
