The Physician & Midwife Collaborative Practice was born out of the notion that as medicine and technology advances, “care” should still be the foundation of providing medical care to women. We focus on providing compassion, education and support in tandem with the best medical course of action for the individual. By bringing together board-certified OB/GYNs and midwives, we are able to provide our

patients with high-touch care in combination with the latest medical technology. This may translate to planning for a natural childbirth with a first-time mother or creating a comprehensive treatment plan, including exercise for a woman who is struggling with menopause. We also do our best to keep this level of care accessible, by offering multiple providers, four office locations, extensive office hours, and 24/7 on-site staff at Inova Alexandria Hospital. In order to respond efficiently and accurately to your needs, we also maintain electronic medical records and offer centralized support staff who can access your lab results and quickly set appointments. This World Hepatitis Day, we’re highlighting the importance of awareness, prevention, and early detection during pregnancy.

Hepatitis B screening is a routine part of prenatal care because, in some cases, the virus can be passed from mother to baby during childbirth. If Hepatitis B is detected during pregnancy, your provider can recommend additional monitoring, appropriate treatment, and next steps after delivery to help reduce the risk of transmission.

Routine screening gives your provider the information they need to plan care during your pregnancy and after birth.

29% of women ages 45–54 were diagnosed with another condition before learning menopause was causing their symptoms.

The menopause transition can bring a wide range of symptoms, including hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, brain fog, mood changes, migraines, and heart palpitations. Because symptoms vary from person to person, they aren't always immediately recognized as menopause.

One patient shared:

"I have been searching for a GYN that had #1 empathy and #2 knowledge about menopause. I felt comfortable, and my questions were answered."

If you're experiencing symptoms that may be related to menopause, talking with a provider who is knowledgeable about menopause can help you better understand your options.

According to the National Cancer Institute, about 5–10% of all cancers are caused by inherited genetic changes, but many people don't realize they may be at increased risk.

If you have a personal or family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer, genetic counseling and testing may help you better understand your hereditary cancer risk and guide future screening or prevention options.

Talk with your provider about whether genetic testing may be right for you or your family.

Melissa Fleming, CNM, shares some of the most common recommendations she discusses with patients, including staying active, practicing relaxation techniques, and using movement and position changes during labor to support your body's natural process.

Maintaining healthy habits and allowing labor to begin when both you and your baby are ready is often the best approach.
