American Council of the Blind

American Council of the Blind Strives to increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity, and quality of life for all people who are blind or have low vision.

The American Council of the Blind is a national membership organization formed by people who are blind to promote the independence, dignity and advancement of people with blindness and visual impairment. Members are blind, visually impaired or fully sighted people, from all walks of life, and ranging in age from teens to seniors. ACB encourages people with vision impairment to live and work indepe

ndently, to make significant contributions within their communities, and to advocate for themselves. ACB governmental affairs staff constantly monitors laws and regulations crucial to the lives of people who are blind. Issues which receive ACB’s attention include civil rights, education, employment, Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, guide dog access, pedestrian safety, travel and recreation, expanded public transportation, adaptive technology, braille literacy and more. When appropriate, ACB works in coalition with other disability groups worldwide to create a range of effective programs for people who are visually impaired.

Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois and Senator Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania recently introduced bipartisan legislation to reauthorize the All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP), which was established through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021.

ASAP grants provide federal funding to help states improve accessibility at pre-ADA public transit stations. Improvements can include installing elevators and ramps, as well as adding accessible wayfinding features, making it easier for people with disabilities to navigate and use public transportation.

ACB proudly supported the creation of the All Stations Accessibility Program in 2021, and we are proud to support the ASAP Reauthorization Act today.

This year’s walk took place during the recent ACB Conference and Convention, with participants joining both in person and virtually.

ACB is grateful for the generous support of Lighthouse Guild, which will help strengthen and grow our services and programs for people who are blind or have low vision!

Lighthouse Guild is a New York-based nonprofit that has worked with the blind and low-vision community for over 100 years. Its purpose is to empower people who are blind or have vision loss to live, work, and shine — through care, community, and technology.

Care that meets people where they are: low-vision services, independent living skills, counseling, and guidance for families figuring out what comes next.

Community built on the idea that no one should navigate vision loss alone: support groups, adaptive sports, access to the arts, peer connection, and programs for youth and teens.

Technology that keeps expanding what's possible. The organization's Technology Center trains people on adaptive technology, and its Tech Pals program builds intergenerational mentorship — pairing younger blind and low-vision tech users with adults growing their confidence. Lighthouse Guild is also partnering with Meta to expand access and help ensure Meta's glasses are built with the blind and low-vision community in mind. Earlier this year, President and CEO Thomas Panek, who is blind, ran the NYC Half Marathon using them!

And not all of it requires being in New York. Remote support groups and virtual services reach people across the country and beyond.

Want to find out more? Follow Lighthouse Guild or visit lighthouseguild.org.

Thank you, Lighthouse Guild, for your partnership and for your ongoing work to empower people who are blind or have vision loss.

Today marks the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a landmark civil rights law that prohibited discriminatory voting practices and established important protections for voters with disabilities, including the right to receive assistance from a person of their choosing at the polls.

ACB continues to advocate for an accessible voting experience at every stage, from in-person voting to remote voting options. Building on the foundation of the Voting Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Help America Vote Act, we work to ensure people who are blind or have low vision can fully participate in the democratic process.
