Play isn’t extra. It’s essential.
After attending AOTA Inspire 2026 and reflecting on nearly 9 years as a pediatric occupational therapist, one thing continues to be clear:
Play is a primary occupation across the lifespan.
And that includes more than just what we traditionally think of.
Outdoor play builds regulation, coordination, confidence, and real-life skills that carry over into everyday routines.
But let’s also talk about something that often gets misunderstood…
Interactive tech.
Interactive technology is not just “screen time.”
When used intentionally, it can support:
• visual attention and tracking
• fine motor control and finger isolation
• problem solving and executive functioning
• communication through AAC and interactive platforms
It can be leisure.
It can be play.
It can be therapy.
In occupational therapy, we focus on participation, function, and meaningful engagement.
That means meeting children and adults where they are—whether that’s outside, at home, at school, or even through digital play.
At DunnWell Therapy LLC, I help families understand how to use everyday activities to support development in real life environments.
Because the goal is not perfection.
It’s participation.
If you’re looking for support with sensory regulation, executive functioning, fine motor skills, or daily routines, I’m here to help.
