โ€œGrief is not linear. It loops, twists, and doubles back when we least expect it. Yet every time we revisit it, something inside grows softer, wiser, more compassionate. Healing is simply learning to walk through life with a heart that remembers.โ€ โ€” Unknown

โ€œYou will lose someone you canโ€™t live without, and your heart will be badly broken. But the truth is, you never really get over the loss โ€“ your learn to live with it. You will rebuild yourself again and again, piece by piece. Eventually, you will find beauty in the cracks, strength in the softness, and grace in your survival. Healing doesnโ€™t erase the pain, but it does transform it. One day you will wake up and find that youโ€™re breathing again, laughing again โ€“ and that is its own quiet miracle.โ€ โ€” Anne Lamott

Rex Allen Smith

Born to Rosemarry and Larry on May 12, 1974, in Allegan, Michigan, At the age of 52, Rex passed away on May 31, 2026.

Rex spent much of his life in Fennville, Michigan, where he built a life centered around hard work, family, friendship, and laughter.

Rex was a hardworking man and dedicated turkey farmer for many years. He took pride in his work and carried a strong work ethic throughout his life. Outside of work, Rex truly lived life his own way. He loved fishing and was especially known for catching catfish. Whether he was out enjoying mud runs, driving through the mud, camping with family and friends, or sitting around a bonfire sharing stories and laughs, Rex was happiest surrounded by the people he loved.

Rex was truly one of a kind. He was known for his hilarious Halloween costumes, his love for Asian culture, and his fearless personality. He never cared what others thought and had a gift for making everyone around him laugh. His collection of shirts with inappropriate sayings became part of who he wasโ€”because that was Rex. And if there was ever a person who should have been sponsored by Mountain Dew, it was him, as few things brought him more daily joy.

More than anything, Rex will be remembered for his humor, his bold spirit, and the way he embraced life without shame or fear. He loved deeply, laughed loudly, and left lasting memories with everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Rex leaves behind six children, seven grandchildren, his loving mother, five sisters, one brother, and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that Rexโ€™s stories, laughter, and unforgettable spirit will live on through all of us. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Rexโ€™s life will be held at a later date once the family is able to arrange a time and place.

Betty Mae (Augustine) Barber
November 2, 1931 - May 31, 2026 (Age 94)

Betty Mae Barber, age 94, of Allegan, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 31, 2026, at Briarwood Assisted Living & Memory Care in Allegan. Born on November 2, 1931, in Otsego, Michigan, Betty was the daughter of Herman Augustine Jr. and Marion Augustine. She graduated from Otsego High School in 1950 and lived a life marked by deep faith, joyful devotion, and love for others. A lifelong Christian and devoted member of Trowbridge Community Church, Betty loved Jesus with all her heart, and that love overflowed into every life she touched. In her later years, she also faithfully enjoyed Pastor Nate Smithโ€™s messages from First Baptist Church of Allegan by livestream. Betty never met a strangerโ€”everyone was welcomed, cherished, and loved. She had a beautiful way of making people feel seen, often with a sweet wink that lets you know she cared. Her radiant smile could light up any room, and her joy for life shone through each day. Along with all that sweetness, Betty also carried a little sassy spice that made her unforgettable and dearly loved by all who knew her. Betty was a homemaker raising her family, while owning and operating Barberโ€™s Furniture with her husband in Allegan for 44 years, and after her children were raised, she returned to work at the Perrigo Company until she retired after 25 years. She was active in many parts of her community, including T.O.P.S. #1007, the Moose Lodge in Otsego, leader for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and 4-H.

Betty is survived by her children, Nancy and Mark Gibson, Cathy Boysen and Greg Nash, Sandy and Scott Gillette, and Lori and Jay Drozd all from Allegan; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild whom she dearly loved and adored; her sister, Ruth Barber; and sister & brother in laws Marilyn Barber, John & Earleen Barber, and Don & Joyce Barber; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Barber; her son, Dale Barber; her son-in-law, Mike Boysen; her grandson, Juston Gillette; her siblings, Marie Hayes, Robert Augustine, Donald Augustine, Bud Augustine, Suzie Augustine, and Richard Augustine; and her brothers-in-laws, Orrie Barber and Hank Barber.

Friends may visit the family at Trowbridge Community Church, 355 26th Street, Otsego, on Thursday, June 4, at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m., a private graveside will take place at Oakwood Cemetery while guests enjoy refreshments until, and luncheon will follow when family returns.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wings Home of Allegan.

All of us at Gorden Funeral Residence are proud to have participated in this yearโ€™s Living History Cemetery Tour hosted by the Friends of Alleganโ€™s Oakwood Cemetery. We especially want thank our employees who volunteered.

Each year, the Friends of Alleganโ€™s Oakwood Cemetery offers visitors the chance to learn about and experience Allegan history brought to life through first-person portrayals of persons resting in Oakwood Cemetery. The event raises much-needed funds to purchase supplies to clean and restore headstones for those interred at Oakwood who no longer have family able to do so.

If you took part in this yearโ€™s event, thank you. And be sure to keep us in mind next year when we return for the 14th Annual Living History Cemetery Tour.

Check out the Friends of Alleganโ€™s Oakwood Cemeteryโ€™s website to learn more about their work and how you can help: https://www.friendsofallegansoakwoodcemetery.org/

Grief and guilt often intertwine, creating a heavy emotional burden after loss.

Grief reflects the natural response to losing someone or something meaningful, while guilt may arise from regrets, unanswered questions, or perceived shortcomings in the relationship. People might replay moments, wishing they had acted differently or said more.

These feelings are common but can intensify the grieving process if left unaddressed. Acknowledging guilt without judgment is important, as is recognizing that no relationship is perfect.

Talking with others, practicing self-compassion, and seeking support can help individuals process both grief and guilt, gradually allowing space for healing and acceptance over time.

Hereโ€™s a great article on learning how to cope with guilt in the midst of grief:
