A potential “Super El Niño” is brewing, and the ripple effects could reshape fresh produce markets worldwide. ☀️🌧️

Ocean temperatures are trending dangerously above normal, setting the stage for a powerful climate pattern that can dramatically distort global weather. What does that mean for fresh produce?
❗ Expect extremes with prolonged droughts in some growing regions and intense flooding and erratic rainfall in others.

Together, these conditions can delay planting, reduce yields, and create volatility across supply chains, putting pressure on availability, pricing, and planning for the entire category. 🍂

For those of us in the produce space, this isn’t just a weather story, it’s a market-moving event worth watching closely.

🔴 Market Alert: Avocados 🔴

The avocado market has shifted quickly this week as Mexico crossings dropped below 900 trucks, tightening supply and driving a $30+ price increase. 🚚

A combination of reduced harvest activity, intentional supply control, and limited inventory has accelerated the shift from an oversupplied market to a constrained one. With Peru not yet at sufficient volume to offset the gap, Mexican fruit is expected to continue setting the tone in the near term.

Key Watchouts:
🥑 Tightened border availability
🥑 Continued upward pressure on pricing
🥑 Short-term supply gap until Peru ramps up

We recommend maintaining flexibility on spec sizes can help minimize disruptions and support order fulfillment during this period.

Nothing like getting your boots a little dusty to see where it all starts 🌱

Our team was out in Salinas this week for field tours, spending time on the ground, asking questions, and seeing the full picture up close. 🍓

Huge thanks to our partners for hosting Foodbuy with HealthTrust: River Fresh Farms, Cal Giant / California Giant Berry Farms, and Greengate. There’s something different about seeing it in person and introducing the people behind it. 🚜

Last month, our NPC National Accounts Produce team came together in Dallas for team alignment sessions and brought the energy with us! 💥

We spent time digging into meaningful, thought‑provoking conversations around how we continue to grow the right way, focusing on:

🔹 Transparency and clarity
🔹 Disciplined, scalable onboarding
🔹 Leveraging our tools and resources
🔹 Extending real value to our Members

And because strong alignment is built on strong relationships, we wrapped things up with a little friendly competition during a high‑energy, team‑building game show experience 🎤🏆 (bragging rights were absolutely earned).

Big ideas, honest dialogue, lots of laughs, and even stronger alignment—this week was one for the books and a solid reminder on the impact of togetherness.

❗ Market Alert: Asparagus ❗

The asparagus market remains tight into early May due to limited supply as Mexico winds down and domestic production has yet to fully bridge the gap.

📈 Mexican volume remains light, with Peru supplementing supply amid controlled availability and some quality variability. Early harvests in Michigan and the Pacific Northwest are increasing but not yet sufficient to relieve pressure.

🚚 Strong Mother’s Day demand is keeping markets firm. Overall quality is acceptable, though variability in spear size and shelf life persists, particularly on longer hauls, leaving the market sensitive to disruption and uneven fill rates.
