One of the most common mistakes during exercise is holding your breath. While it may seem harmless, breath-holding (known as the Valsalva maneuver) can cause unnecessary spikes in blood pressure, increase strain on your body, and reduce your ability to perform movements efficiently.

Instead, focus on engaging your core while continuing to breathe. Proper abdominal bracing doesn't mean holding your breath—it means activating your core muscles while maintaining steady, controlled breathing throughout each exercise!

✅ Inhale through your nose to encourage diaphragmatic breathing, improve lung expansion, and prepare for movement.

✅ Exhale through your mouth during the effort to help stabilize your core, generate force, and maintain proper control.

Coordinating your breathing with movement improves performance, enhances stability, and helps your muscles receive the oxygen they need to keep working efficiently.

At Caruso Physical Therapy & Nutrition, we emphasize proper breathing mechanics with every exercise because the way you breathe is just as important as the movement itself!

This week we came together and wore grey and super hero themed attire to honor the legacy of a super hero who traded in his cape for wings on July 3rd, 2020, Joe Caruso. In honor of him, we decided to let our words speak for themselves.

I had a hard time shortening what we had to say about the impact Joe and Olivia have had on our lives so see the link in our bio titled "Remembering Joe" to read more.

Here is the link for anyone seeing this on Facebook: https://conta.cc/4wlxZFw

Because of Joe, this mission began. Today, because of all of us here, his mission continues.

No matter what battles he faced in this world, his first thought was always, "How can I help?". We continue to pass on his love, his care for others, and his support in the community through what we do each day at the clinic.

⚽️ Physical therapist by profession. Aspiring soccer star for about 10 minutes today.

Spent some time juggling and dribbling before realizing I'll stick to helping athletes move better instead. 😅

What's the most juggles you've ever gotten in a row?

P.S. If you're serious about your sport, ask us about our athlete performance evaluations.

As a nutrition expert, here's a truth most people don't want to hear:

Motivation isn't what creates results.

Motivation comes and goes. Discipline stays.

The people who see lasting change aren't the ones who feel inspired every day—they're the ones who keep showing up, especially when it's hard. Especially during the busiest, most stressful season of the year.

You don't need the perfect plan.
You don't need more willpower.
You don't need to wait until Monday.

You need to keep yourself on your priority list.
Show up as you are.

Do the best you can with what you have today.
Repeat tomorrow.

Success is built in the ordinary moments nobody applauds.

Consistency > Motivation. Every. Single. Time.

👇 Comment "CONSISTENT" if you're committed to showing up for yourself this season, and share this with someone who needs the reminder.

P.S. Most insurances cover nutrition visits at little to no cost to you! ❤️ reach out to learn more!

"I know what to do, I just need to do it."

After more than 10 years as a Registered Dietitian in private practice, I've heard this phrase thousands of times.

Whether you're struggling with disordered eating, sports nutrition, digestive issues, autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalances, or navigating perimenopause and menopause...be careful to not fall into the "should" be doing trap.

The real challenge? Consistency.

And if we're being honest, this is one of the hardest times of year to stay consistent. Schedules are chaotic, routines are disrupted, social events pile up, and healthy habits often take a back seat.

Here's the truth: motivation is overrated.

Motivation comes and goes. Discipline is what creates change.

You don't need to be perfect.
You don't need to get it right 100% of the time.
You don't need another Monday, another month, or another sign from the universe.

You just need to show up. That's the only thing you "should" be doing. Showing. Up. As. You. Are.

The clients who create lasting change aren't the ones who are motivated every day. They're the ones who keep showing up, especially when they don't feel like it.

And if you're currently tempted to cancel your appointment because you "haven't been doing well," "fell off track," or "need to get it together first"...
THAT is usually the biggest sign that you need to SHOW UP.

Your progress doesn't come from avoiding support when things get hard. It comes from leaning into it.

Ready to stop starting over and start building consistency that actually lasts? Send me a DM or book your appointment today. 💛
