Your mouth is the beginning of your gut.

The same bacteria in your gum pockets have been found in your colon, arteries, and brain tissue.

Oral dysbiosis — an imbalanced oral microbiome — can drive intestinal permeability, systemic inflammation, and immune problems throughout the body.

When I see patients with IBS, Crohn's, or chronic inflammation, I always want to know what's happening in their mouth.

This isn't fringe medicine. It's anatomy.

DM GUTMOUTH for the patient research summary.

I'm a biological dentist. I'm also a scientist.

These are not in conflict.

Biological dentistry means testing before treating. It means using materials with the best biocompatibility evidence. It means treating the mouth as part of the body — not as an isolated structure.

The critics call it fringe. I call it evidence-based individualized care.

The root canal isn't always wrong. The silver filling isn't always the villain. What matters is the full picture.

Save this if you've ever felt brushed off when you asked your dentist about materials or systemic health.

Why I stopped placing titanium implants — and what I place instead.

Titanium is considered safe for most patients. But for people with autoimmune conditions, metal sensitivities, or a history of unexplained implant complications, "most patients" isn't good enough.

Zirconia (ceramic) implants are metal-free, have lower bacterial adhesion, don't conduct electricity, and are fully biocompatible for the vast majority of patients — including those who've reacted to other materials.

At PJN Dental, I place zirconia implants exclusively. If you're in the Portland area and exploring your implant options, I'd love to talk through what's right for you.

If you have an autoimmune condition and amalgam fillings — this is worth reading.

Mercury from amalgam doesn't stay put. It off-gasses constantly, especially with heat, chewing, or grinding. For patients with Hashimoto's, Lyme disease, MCAS, or chronic fatigue, that ongoing low-level exposure matters more than most people realize.

At PJN Dental, I use the SMART protocol for safe amalgam removal — and because I'm also a naturopathic medical doctor, I can think through the detox side of the equation with you too.

This isn't about fear. It's about getting the full picture.

If you've been looking for a biological dentist in the Portland area who understands your systemic health, I'd love to talk.

Most people have never heard of cavitations — and most dentists don't screen for them.

After a tooth extraction, your jaw can develop hollow zones where the bone didn't fully heal. No blood flow. No nerve supply. No pain signal. Impossible to detect on a standard X-ray.

These sites can quietly drive systemic inflammation: chronic fatigue, joint pain, autoimmune flares, neurological symptoms.

At PJN Dental, we use 3D CBCT imaging to identify these sites as part of our comprehensive new patient exam.

If you've had extractions and developed unexplained symptoms since — this is worth exploring.

DM CAVITATION and I'll share what we look for.

I was trained like every other dentist. Then I couldn't unsee what I was seeing.

Patients getting sicker after treatment. Research that wasn't being taught in dental school. I spent 5 years investigating the history of dentistry — how mercury became normalized, how root canals became standard care, how extraction became first-line.

I built PJN Dental on a different standard: test first, treat second. The outcomes speak for themselves.

If you've ever questioned conventional dental advice — you're not alone.

There is exactly one dentist in Oregon who is also a licensed naturopathic medical doctor. That's me — Dr. Pascal Nguyen, DMD, NMD.

What that means for you: I don't just treat your teeth. I understand how your oral health connects to your immune system, your hormones, your gut — and I coordinate with your functional medicine or naturopathic doctor as part of your care team.

If you've been searching for a biological dentist in Portland who actually gets the whole-body picture, I'd love to meet you.

One useful AI workflow beats ten impressive demos.

Here is a real example:

New patient FAQ prep — instead of answering the same 8 questions in every consult, we built an AI draft that covers our most common concerns in our voice. A hygienist reviews before it goes out. Takes 2 minutes instead of 15.

That is the whole system. Not magic. Not autonomous. Useful, reviewable, and owned.

What is the one workflow in your practice that would change your week?

Your dentist should know about all 6 of these stress pillars — because they all affect your healing.

Sleep + airway. Gut health + nutrition. Emotional stress (it depletes magnesium). Hidden dental infections. Environmental toxins + heavy metals. Bite misalignment.

One treatment can't fix all six. Healing requires addressing the whole picture — not just the tooth.

AI in dentistry is not a one-time install. It is an ongoing operation.

The 6 pillars of Dental AI Operations:

1. Upgrades — test new tools quarterly before rolling out
2. Optimization — refine prompts and context as protocols evolve
3. Monitoring — track errors, edge cases, team friction
4. Security — review what data touches AI regularly
5. Knowledge hygiene — update context when SOPs change
6. Compliance + governance — document your AI use policy
