When your teen says “nothing,” it can take everything in you not to ask five more questions.
Because you can SEE that something is wrong. And as a parent, you want to help.
But one of the biggest shifts in parenting teens is learning that being available and getting answers are not the same thing.
Sometimes, the more we push a teenager to talk, the more they pull away.
Instead, try giving them something incredibly powerful:
An open door without pressure.
“I can tell something’s off. You don’t have to talk about it, but I’m here if you want me.”
Then give them some space.
They may not talk when you’re ready.
They may talk in the car. While you’re making a snack. Or at 10:47 at night when you thought the moment had passed.
💜 Connection with your teen isn’t always about getting them to open up. Sometimes it’s about becoming the person they know they can come back to.
💜Save this for the next time “nothing” clearly means something—and share it with another parent navigating the teen years.
