Emergency hospitals closing...seemingly only in communities needing it the most. These communities are experiencing all kinds of trauma: violence, drugs, poverty, food insecurity, stress, su***de, racism, and more. When I was a new mother, I lived in this area. This is where being "just a number" to the medical industry became a reality and struck the Purpose in me to educate holistic healthcare to others wanting to be heard and cared for.
What is a Level 1 trauma center? According to the ATS (American Trauma Society):
"Level I Trauma Center is a comprehensive regional resource that is a tertiary care facility central to the trauma system. A Level I Trauma Center is capable of providing total care for every aspect of injury β from prevention through rehabilitation.
Elements of Level I Trauma Centers Include:
-24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons, and prompt availability of care in specialties such as orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, internal medicine, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial, pediatric and critical care.
-Referral resource for communities in nearby regions.
-Provides leadership in prevention, public education to surrounding communities.
-Provides continuing education of the trauma team members.
-Incorporates a comprehensive quality assessment program.
-Operates an organized teaching and research effort to help direct new innovations in trauma care.
-Program for substance abuse screening and patient intervention.
-Meets minimum requirement for annual volume of severely injured patients."
Today, my daughter is a Blessed member of the medical industry and this hospital. The work she and her comrades do, caring for those in these communities, is affected as well.
Questions I am asking:
-How is Wellstar losing money (only hospitals in struggling cities) and still making money as a company?
-Why isn't Georgia incorporating the Medicaid expansion?
-Why not use the company's profits to keep these hospitals open?
Thoughts?
Wellstar Health System says Atlanta Medical Center's emergency room will close approximately two weeks before the hospital shuts down for good on Nov. 1.
