A very special “Thank You” to Daniel Limonade, the Associate Chief Engineer for Earth and Earth Science at JPL. Yesterday, Mr. Limonade gave an in-depth and informative lecture about Climate Change. Looking at historical and current data points, discussing current scientific technology and looking at future predictions, he shed new light on the current state of the earths climate. The residents asked several thoughtful questions and everyone left with a new understanding of the climate and how we all can help slow down the changes affecting our world.

Yesterday, residents enjoyed a trip to the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles. They spent free time wandering the museum, before joining up with a docent for a formal tour. Everyone enjoyed visiting the museum, most for the first time. Lunch at an Italian restaurant rounded out the day.

Today MonteCedro team members and residents joined together for a drill for the Great California ShakeOut. At 10:15, the alert went out. Everyone stopped, dropped, and held on, until the “shaking has ended” message arrived. From there incident command was initiated and a full sweep of the building was carried out. When the drill concluded, team held a debriefing and rough spots in preparation were identified and solutions created.
It was a very successful day of learning and preparedness preparation.

The always wonderful Dr.Kelly Anderson gave a musical lecture titled “Autumn Song,” last week. With music by Tchaikovsky, Lü, Duke, and others, he filled the room with song. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Anderson back in October for a presentation titled “Boo!”

Chaplain Liz celebrated the “Blessing of the Animals,” with the residents and their furry companions this week. Dogs, cats, and memorial items were all present to receive a blessing. It was a very special and moving service.

A special thank you to Hans Allhoff, of Altadena Heritage, for his wonderful lecture titled “Zane Grey, the Open and Altadena.” The audience filled Eaton Theater and an overflow room, everyone enjoying the entertaining and informative talk.

The wonderful music of Larry Koonse (guitar) and Alex Iles (trombone) filled MonteCedro this week, in a concert arranged by our Creative Living partners Melodia Mariposa. The residents loved the unique combination of guitar and trombone, as they relaxed and enjoyed an hour of jazz music.

This week Executive Chef Jared, presented a teaching kitchen about the super foods that keep you strong! He made a very healthy and delicious nut & seed bark that the residents loved! Each month the dining team holds a special educational lecture and highlights a super food on the menu. It’s a fantastic way for the residents to enjoy their meals with the added boost of knowing the nutritional benefits.

A dinner based on "Classic Literature," was the theme of the Chefs Table dinner this month. Executive Chef Jared Oliver created courses that were unique, delicious, and creatively tied to the books they represented. From the words of "Gilgamesh," to the story of the "The Great Gatsby," he took the residents on a culinary journey as wonderful as the books they represented.
