Today is !

The holiday, which originated in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. This day represents freedom and justice for Black Americans and serves as an opportunity for all of us to educate ourselves about the continued impact of trauma caused by slavery.

Today, weโ€™re focusing on uplifting Black voices in mental health by highlighting Black-led mental health organizations. We hope youโ€™ll celebrate Juneteenth by supporting their work. โ™ฅ๏ธ

Happy Juneteenth! Also known as Black Independence Day or Emancipation Day! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’š

On June 19th, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger, along with other Black soldiers, rode into Texas to announce to at least 250,000 enslaved Black/African Americans that, by executive order, they were legally free.

The news arrived in Galveston, Texas, two years AFTER Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in September of 1862 (which went into effect on January 1st, 1863), because Confederate territories were not compelled to observe the Proclamation.

Now, on the eve of January 1st, Watch Night Service continues to be a tradition to honor when Black/African families (free and enslaved) awaited the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation to take effect.
