My Why

Twenty-five years ago today, my life changed forever.

At just 18 years old, I experienced my first profound loss when my mom passed away at only 40 years of age. She died alone in a hospital bed, surrounded by machines and tubes, shortly after suffering cardiac arrest following open-heart surgery. This was years after chemotherapy, countless doctor’s appointments, many hospitalizations, and more times than not of feeling ill from the effects of “trying to survive” from Ovarian Cancer.

At that time, we didn’t know what hospice was. No one explained it to us. No one offered it as an option. We were never given the opportunity to choose quality of life over simply extending life. We didn’t know there was another way.

That experience has shaped every step of my career.

It is the reason I became a hospice Certified Nursing Assistant. It is why I continued my education to become a hospice Registered Nurse Case Manager. And it is what continues to drive me today as the Director of Operations for AseraCare Hospice in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Hospice is so much more than end-of-life care. It is about compassion, dignity, comfort, and honoring what matters most to each individual and family. It is about ensuring that patients—not their disease—have a voice in how they spend their final days.

Every day, I have the privilege of helping families receive the care we never knew existed. I get to help patients remain comfortable, surrounded by the people they love. I get to witness children holding their parent’s hand during their final moments instead of wondering if they died alone. I get to help people maintain dignity, make informed decisions, and take control of their end-of-life journey.

While I cannot change what happened to my own family 25 years ago, I can help change the experience for countless others.

That is my “why.”

Every patient, every family, every hand held, every tear shared, every peaceful goodbye reminds me why I chose hospice. It isn’t just my profession—it is my purpose.

If my family’s story can help even one person learn about hospice sooner, ask the questions we never knew to ask, or find comfort during one of life’s most difficult journeys, then my mother’s legacy continues to live on through the work I am blessed to do every day.

It was a wonderful day at the Vendor Fair hosted by Celebration Villa! We were grateful for the opportunity to share information about hospice, answer questions, and connect with residents, families, staff, and members of the community.

The event featured a fantastic variety of local vendors, including Green Bean Coffee, Doug’s Dawgs, Scentsy, Avon, Mimmies Creation, Country Crafts, and many more. It was great to see everyone enjoying the day while supporting local businesses and learning about the valuable resources available in our community.

A heartfelt thank you to Celebration Villa for inviting us and allowing us to help spread awareness about hospice care. We truly appreciate your hospitality and look forward to future opportunities to connect with the community!
