🤍 Continuing this month’s “What Are We Reading?” series with Emma’s second pick:

📚The Grieving Body by Mary-Frances O’Connor

✨While The Grieving Brain explores the neuroscience of loss, this book focuses on something many grieving people experience firsthand— grief doesn’t just affect emotions. It affects the body, too.

🔎The book explores how bereavement impacts the nervous system, sleep, immune functioning, stress hormones, appetite, energy levels, and overall physical health.

🔑A few reflections that stood out:

🫀Grief is a Whole-Body Experience
Loss can impact nearly every system in the body, which helps explain why grief can feel physically exhausting and overwhelming.

😴 The Body May Stay in Survival Mode
Even when someone appears to be “holding it together,” the nervous system may still be carrying chronic stress, tension, exhaustion, or dysregulation.

🌿 Rest and Care Matter During Grief
The book emphasizes that nourishment, hydration, sleep, movement, routine, and support are especially important during periods of bereavement.

🤝 Connection Helps the Nervous System Heal
Supportive relationships and feeling emotionally understood can help create a sense of safety and regulation during grief.

🌱 Healing and Pain Can Coexist
Grief may permanently shape us, but people can still experience meaning, connection, resilience, and growth while carrying loss.

🫂 One of the most powerful themes throughout this book is the reminder that grief is not something to “push through” or “perform correctly.” It is a deeply human response that affects the mind and body alike.

This week some of our HRC team spent time expanding their knowledge about working with youth. 🧠

The Orchard Place Trauma Informed Care Conference included 4 different speakers who addressed topics such as adolescents and technology, building care-focused systems, play therapy, and supporting clients with sensory-processing needs.

At Healing Rock Counseling we value continuing education and are dedicated to supporting our clients of all ages! 🫶🏽

We are also super proud of our team member, Lindsay Porter, who was a key player in organizing and putting on this conference. We see you Lindsay!!! 🖤

🫂 You can be compassionate without becoming responsible for everyone else’s emotions.

🫶 Empathy matters. Supporting others matters. But so do boundaries, emotional balance, and remembering that other people are capable of navigating their own feelings too.

🧠This month’s “What Are We Reading?” feature comes from Emma, who chose two books exploring the neuroscience and physiology of grief.

📚The first is The Grieving Brain by Mary-Frances O’Connor.

✨This book offers a compassionate and fascinating look at what happens in the brain after loss— helping explain why grief can feel emotional, physical, confusing, exhausting, and deeply consuming all at once.

🔎Rather than viewing grief as something we simply “get over,” the book explores how the brain adapts to the absence of someone important to us.

🔑A few takeaways that stood out:
💞 Grief Reflects Connection
The pain of grief is closely tied to attachment and love. Our brains build deep expectations around the people closest to us—their presence, voice, routines, and support.

🧠 The Brain Struggles with Permanence
Even when we logically know someone has died, parts of the brain may still expect them to return. This can make grief feel disorienting and unpredictable.

🤍 There is No “Right” Timeline
Healing is not linear, and grief does not follow a universal schedule. The process of adapting to loss looks different for everyone.

🌱 Continuing Bonds Can Be Healing
The book challenges the idea that healing means “letting go.” Staying connected through memories, rituals, stories, or meaning-making can be a healthy part of grief.

🤝 Support Matters
Feeling emotionally supported and understood can help regulate the nervous system during periods of grief and loss.

💐 Emma shared that she was drawn to this book because of her background in neuroscience and her interest in understanding how the brain is impacted by grief and mental health. She also appreciated how validating the book feels for grieving individuals— emphasizing that grief affects the whole person, not just emotions.

☀️ As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that some medications can increase sensitivity to heat and make dehydration or heat-related illness more likely.

💊 This includes certain antidepressants, ADHD medications, mood stabilizers, antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and more.

A few reminders for the warmer months:
💧 Stay hydrated throughout the day
🧴 Wear sunscreen and protective clothing
⏰ Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours
🌳 Take breaks in shaded or cool areas
🐾 Don’t forget your pets need extra care in the heat too

🩺 If you take medication and are unsure how heat may affect you, talk with your doctor or pharmacist!

⛱️ Staying informed and prepared can make a big difference this summer!
