This summer heat in Amarillo is HOT. Working outside all day, playing hard at the park, or just being in the sun longer than usual can catch up with you fast.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke aren't the same thing. Exhaustion: heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea. Heat stroke: no sweating, confusion, body temperature above 103.

Heat stroke is an emergency.

Amarillo, it's going to be hot this week!

Heat exhaustion shows up first, with heavy sweating, clammy skin, and dizziness. Shade, water, and a few minutes to cool down usually turn it around. Heat stroke is a different animal, with a body temperature above 103 degrees, confusion, or fainting, and it calls for 911 right away.

Staying ahead of both starts with water. Drink before you're thirsty, take a few sips every fifteen to twenty minutes outside, and watch for dark urine as your body's early warning sign.
