Medicare Open Enrollment will run from now through December 7, 2026.

Every fall, Medicare beneficiaries have an important opportunity to review their health insurance coverage and make sure it still meets their needs. Medicare Open Enrollment is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a chance to protect your health, manage healthcare expenses, and make informed decisions about your coverage for the year ahead.

Whether you are enrolled in Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, or prescription drug coverage, taking time to review your options can make a meaningful difference.

Benefits of locally-owned Health Care Agencies
We have taken a deeper dive into what it means to be local and not a national chain. Studies show local agencies can provide more personalized care, and local agencies in general can respond more quickly to needs.
Benefits of local home health agencies:
· Personalized care: Smaller agencies can offer more individualized care and attention.
· Community partnerships: Local agencies can partner with community organizations to provide care that considers social and mental health.
· Reduced barriers: Community partnerships can help reduce barriers to accessing care.

Why Nutrition and Hydration Matter for Seniors

As we age, good nutrition and proper hydration become especially important for maintaining strength, energy, and independence. Seniors may be at greater risk for dehydration and poor nutrition because of decreased thirst, changes in appetite, difficulty preparing meals, medications, or difficulty chewing and swallowing.

Signs a senior may not be eating or drinking enough include:

Increased weakness or fatigue
Dizziness or feeling lightheaded
Dry mouth or darker-colored urine
Unintentional weight loss
Constipation
Confusion or unusual changes in behavior
Decreased strength or difficulty performing daily activities

Normal age-related memory changes are common and usually don’t interfere with your ability to live independently. You may occasionally forget someone’s name, misplace your keys or glasses, walk into a room and forget why you went there, or need a little more time to remember something. You typically remember it later, especially when given a reminder or clue. You can still manage your medications, finances, appointments, household tasks, and daily routines.

Memory loss that is not considered normal tends to be more frequent, noticeable, and progressive. Warning signs may include repeatedly asking the same questions, forgetting recent conversations or events, getting lost or confused in familiar places, forgetting how to complete familiar tasks, having difficulty managing bills or medications, frequently missing appointments, struggling to find common words, or relying increasingly on others to make decisions. Changes in personality, judgment, mood, or ability to safely perform everyday activities can also be concerning.

The key difference is impact and progression. Occasional forgetfulness is a normal part of aging, but memory changes that are getting worse or interfering with daily life should be discussed with a healthcare professional

5 Warning Signs a Senior May Be Losing Independence

As our loved ones age, small changes can sometimes be easy to overlook. Recognizing the early signs that a senior is struggling with everyday activities can help families provide support before a crisis occurs.

1. Difficulty with everyday tasks
Bathing, dressing, preparing meals, getting in and out of a chair, or managing household chores may become increasingly difficult.

2. Changes in walking or balance
Shuffling, holding onto furniture, avoiding stairs, or becoming unsteady can be signs that strength and mobility are declining—and may increase the risk of falls.

3. Trouble managing medications or appointments
Missing medications, taking them incorrectly, forgetting appointments, or becoming overwhelmed by routine responsibilities may indicate that additional support is needed.

4. Increasing isolation or loss of interest
A senior who stops participating in activities they once enjoyed, avoids leaving the house, or becomes increasingly isolated may be struggling physically, emotionally, or cognitively.

5. Needing more help than before
One of the biggest warning signs is a noticeable increase in the amount of assistance needed from family members. If everyday tasks that were once easy are becoming difficult, it may be time to consider additional support.

The goal isn’t to take away independence—it’s to help preserve it. Recognizing these changes early can allow families and healthcare providers to put the right support in place, helping seniors remain safe, active, and independent at home for as long as possible.
